Title: New classic ships got out for the day
Post by: Dave_Trible on April 27, 2017, 03:28:59 PM
Today I got the two classic winter projects out for test flights before hanging them on the wall and getting the 'serious' machines out and start working.  The Veco Hurricane flew really well and seems almost over powered at 44 ounces on its McCoy .40.  Flew briskly in a four cycle.  I could try a flatter prop like 10-5 but may just drop a .35 in.  These are the Series .21 engines.  The 42 ounce Ruffy should fly well but I'm having some issues with the Merco .35. I came home and trial fit a Fox and Red Head McCoy.  Going with the red head.  This old Merco is the sleeve bearing silver case and head but having issues finding a good NVA for it.  I have a Blackstreak and a couple Merco Red Heads but the parts don't fit.  That one will go back on the shelf for now.  I got the Red Heads to go in my future Warburton Tony which used that engine.  Anyway next trip out I'll try my Sterling Spitfire once again with a new tank and a Mac in place of the original K&B Stallion, then put them up for another year.

Thanks Skip.  I just have to keep building- lest I just vibrate and bounce off the walls.  May never fly many of them much.... maybe somebody will.

Wish I could have been there.  I think we need to lay out some carpeting for a take off strip for the serious birds.   I know scraps 4 foot wide and spiked down does wonders on take off practice.

Love the Veco Hurricane.  I built one years ago.  Flew it for half a lap and lost it6 due to no wing tip weight and being a really stupid kid! LL~ H^^

Glenn that's a shame.  You'd have really liked it.  I had one 40 years ago and flew it my last few flights at KC's Swope Park flying site just before they buried the circle to put a soccer complex on top of it.  ( 1000 years from now they'll dig up that great old concrete circle and think it was a religious shrine-maybe it was).  Mine too met it's inglorious demise but at the hands of my flying protege at the time.  Did I ever mention my feelings about soccer?

Dave they did remove the cement donut we had there, also the trees the trees we wanted moved for a grass circle.   When I was there last the original asphalt take off strip was still there.  Amazing how they leveled that all off for the soccer fields.
