Here it is framed up with wings covered with Poly Span. Dope is thinned 50% and four coats on the wings and two on the main fuselage. It will be powered with my trusty Fox 35 Stunt that is still in the Dragon. Hope to have this at VSC. Don't know weight as I haven't got my postal scales yet and the fish scales are all that accurate. Later, DOC Holliday

Super I/beam I have seen those plans many times but never seen one built. It looks like a challenge to get a strong trailing edge with that change of direction in the middle. Nice job

There is 1/8th ply embeded on the front side of the trailing edge. The leading edge is the one that was fun. There are plates that help control the curve of similar to the Staggerwing he designed. One thing about I-Beam wings is you better like cutting ribs. Haven't compared them yet, but, I think someone stated that Jack used the same airfoil for all his ribs. More to come, DOC Holliday

No, Doc, I have a few templates (each a *little* different) for some of Jack's I-Beam planes. If he used the same airfoil, they didn't get published that way.

Hi Terry, I think I have maybe about three weeks into it. The construction goes pretty fast once the fuse is done. The cutting of ribs gets to be a chore, but, is fun, Now have Now have 8 coats of thinned nitrate clear on the polyester and four more with talc in the dope. I have been doing two coats and then let set for a day or two. Hope to have it ready for VSC. Later DOC Holliday

Sorry Bill, I have been in this part of the forum for awhile. If you look real close you will see some spacers between the spar and the leading edge. Of course the fuse is the center jig and then tip jigs to align everything. You know typical I-beam construction. The Spit now has primer on the parts I think that need primer waiting to be sanded. Of all the pictures I can find of the Spit do not show the colors. So I am going with a light grey on under neath sides. Then Olive drab for the dark areas and some yellow added to lighten it up for the light areas. The canopy will probably be light grey. Haven't made all the odd bumps and bulges yet. The P-39 is ready for clear, minus the nit picking stuff that I may add after initial flights. Later, DOC Holliday

Thank, Doc. The bottom on the RAF planes were *Robin Egg Blue* (IIRC, it was SOME *egg*). An almost aqua color. Tops were *sand and spinach* (tan and green, of course) or dark green/gray.

You have done a beautiful job on the Spit AND the P-39!

Colours for RAF aircraft of WW2 varied, under surfaces are SKY and the upper surfaces are DARK EARTH and DARK GREEN. I have an original 1942 Aircraft of the Fighting Powers, and in it are the official Air Ministry colour charts, a complete page of official colour chips! If I can scan the page in and the colours don't vary too much, I'll try and put it on here. You yanks never get RAF colours correct!!!!

Is there a Duck Egg or Robin Egg blue listed?? Over 35 years ago, when I was doing the IPMS thing, that was a color referred to in literature for the undersides of the Spitfire and such. I also recall buying a tin of Humbrol paint in that color. (something) egg blue.

Hello Bill,

The colour you are referring to is Duck egg blue/green, it was officially known as Sky.
Sky does look duck egg coloured, Son B, (I have two, A and B!) tells me that if I scan these colour chips in to the comp. they will look nothing like the correct colours! (kids know everything, don't they?) I bow to his superior knowledge. If you want to see 100's of colour pictures of Spitfires go to the Air-Britain site http://www.abpic.co.uk/index.php type in Spitfire and spend the rest of the evening on the web!!!! its a superb site for colour schemes, also you could try Primeportal.net.

Well guys/gals I have already started painting the Spit. I bought a plastic scale high dollar kit to get the color scheme I like. The bottem is a light grey. The top is a darker grey with a dark green, but, yet it is not too dark either. I sprayed the greys today and hope to get the green on tomorrow. Later, DOC Holliday

I seem to remember the Sterling plans having those colors on the call outs.... That one AND the P-39 will be killers!
Which engine are you putting into them?? I keep forgetting, sorry..

(seems I remember a FP40??)
