My new classic plane, Hi Johnson Stuka
« on: July 30, 2018, 10:25:24 PM »
Started my classic legal plane. This is the one I won at VSC in the raffle. Got the wing started tonight. Lots of doublers and stuff going in.

Looks like the wing is quick. My question is, will the wing mounted gear hold up to grass landings?

Assembly of the giant building surface. This is a 59" wing.

Ribs all set in for dry fit. I think the "gull" wing is really neat!

This has always been one of my favourite planes.  Ever since I saw the original article so many years ago.  I'll be watching this with much interest! H^^

Thanks guys! No progress last night. It was bowling league night for my wife. She won the side pot for highest scratch game of the first round. Tonight my goal is mostly to adjust all the ribs so they are fully floating. There are some that are a little too tight on the spar. They're not on their respective little jig blocks at rest.

Nothing worthy of pics last night. The W4 ribs have a ply doubler on each side of their nose. My alignment of laminating the doublers on one wasn't exactly perfect so it wouldn't sit at 90 degrees to the spar. So a little sanding in the spar slot cleared that up.
The rest was just a few ribs that were too tight on the spar slot. So I sanded a little so they floated on the spar and sit on their little jig blocks. I'm going to try really hard to make this plane nice.

Oh and here's the paint scheme I'll be using. I ordered graphics from Callie's graphics. It was neat because she has planes pre-loaded in her system. You just pick the plane and then pick the scale. This one worked out to 1/11

Nice job so far on a rather difficult wing.
Does any one have a picture of jack sheets IBeam Stuka.

I'm not sure Eddy. I have this old pic of Charlie Reeves with a big Straight wing Stuka Shark 45. Wonderful pic even if it's not the I beamer.

Edited to correct plane. I still love the paint scheme

Well after 11-12 hours working outside, it's pretty nice to work on this wing in the AC! Then after all the rib adjustments, I feel like I worked another day!
BC mount started and all the ribs adjusted to sit level on the building board.

Dry fit of the upper spar. A little more rib adjusting needed. The 3 clamps are my markers. Those three raised up a couple thousandths. I really want to make this as straight as I can.

I now see why people told me this could be a difficult wing to build. Lots of rib adjustments! The upper 1/4x1/4 spar goes in, with 8 miter cuts. Full length at the W4 out, and two sections each side mitre cut to go up and over the center. Lots of precision sanding to get "seemless" joints.

Now a big ply spar doubler goes into that center section, to W4 on each side.

I have a Sheeks stuka that I built a few years ago. I know it was posted on here at brodaks alongside the bmjr prototype I believe. I can't post a picture as my computer savvy is nil.I made the wing equal panels so it also 59 inches in span. I am also building the Hi Johnson version from plans I got off ebay. I did buy the rib set from bmjr models. I have a lot of parts made but not assembled yet as other projects are ahead of it. I will be watching your progress to learn what issues may crop up.Your work looks very nice.  George

This TE is kinda kicking my butt. I tried to add the TE as one piece. I ended up cutting that splice, added it back in and rejoined it. Now, I had to spritz the TE with a little isopropyl alcohol and weight it down to let it relax. It was probably close enough, but I'm trying to exceed my previous building projects.

The TE sheeting goes up and over the center hump also! I'm hoping this turns out to be a good way to attach the TE here.

The glue is dry and the clamps are off. And, it's still resting on the little jig tabs! So far it's still relatively straight!

GREAT job Dane!  I like how meticulous you have been on getting the alignment of the ribs on the spar, looks like it paid off nicely.  Way back in the early 1960's, the guy who was helping my dad get started in stunt built one from the magazine plans.  His finished at 60 ounces with a Fox 35.  It looked badass but it just flew.... bad!  I am sure you will not have THAT problem!

Gonna keep tuning in on this thread - good luck and keep up the good work.

Bob Z.

This one will be electrified!

Dennis, because this will be my first big electric model, I have no idea what the weight will or can be. Based on how I usually build, and this size of model I would hope for 45oz?
I am REALLY excited about this one though!

You just made my day!  I think 45-48 oz RTF is definitely in play, especially if you stay away from a paint finish - and I know THAT is right in your wheelhouse too.

Here's a minor thing. The upper spar doubler sits in the slots of the ribs. The depth is not correct on the W4 ribs on both sides. Therefore the doubler does not slide down all the way. I need to measure the W4 and see if I can bring down the slot without getting into the landing gear area.

Yeah I know. The ME 109 might not be that much more work. The wing is built. Gotta add controls. But I'm such a picky little b!+c# anymore about the controls, that would take a few days. I wouldn't be able to finish that and then this and be Classic legal for my own contest! Lol. Too much stuff to do! Lol

It's the little victories on this wing that keep me going. Plus posting pics helps keep this project on the priority list.

I figured out how I can get the top spar doubler set in place. So here it is, clamped and drying.

Occasionally I'll sneak into the building room for a few minutes.... I got the leading edge square stock in place. A few little mitre cuts and the square stock just fell right in. Nice fit. Must have been from all that picky rib placement.

Here's some progress on the LE sheeting. Lots of truing up sanding and shaping. The center sheets are cut as a parallelogram and laid in. I sanded down some 1/32 scraps to about 1/64 I would guess to fill a little gap between the center and inboard section there. Other than that, real nice fit.

Sorry, I haven't checked this lately. We were hoping to be moving into a new house (new to us). So I kinda put building on hold until then. My building room is just a storage room for now....
