Don,

Just re-masking and doing a bit of touch up. I had shot the plane silver first and discovered that the red didn't stick all that well. Should have shot a light coat of clear over the silver to lock it down. So I'm having to re-mask and re-shoot a couple of areas. A real pain when it's 5 or 6 colors you're messing with. Nothing too serious, but a pain none the less. Should be ready for a coat of clear or two and panels lines, etc. in a day or so.

Keep yer shirt on. You'll see it.   H^^

Hey Don,

It's almost ready for show and tell. Still some touch up to do, but I really like the color combination. Much better than I thought it was going to be there for awhile.

I'll post a "progress" picture soon.

OK, just for Don here are a couple of in process pics. I haven't scraped the flashing from the tape yet and there are a couple of spots I still need to re-shoot, so be kind. Man, I am never going to try to paint again when the weather is this cold and humid. It's been one fiasco after another. Sigh ....

OH BABY~OH BABY  y1 #^ <= #^ y1 <= #^ <= y1 <= #^ <= y1 <= #^ y1Randy, I like it, nice contrast! really elegant looking IMHO. YOu come up with some very interesting color combinations,  they work though I dont think I would have ever thought of them. This one went from screaming yellow, to this, I have to say , Yellow is one of my favorite colors, but on this plane, yum yum
Shame I wont get to see it in person since its going on the southern circuit before I will be able to check it out.

Mark,

Thanks.

Ty,

It just gets some black for accent in a couple of areas. Like along the bottom of the canopy.

Hi Steve,

Well, that's where it gets complicated. I have colors mixed at the local auto paint store. See a car go by that you like the color? look up the color number on www.autocolorlibrary.com and go down to the local auto paint store and have them mix it up.  :)

(it's a bit more complicated than that but not much- if you want details, email me and I can tell you the process)

The white is just white (Ford Performance White) with some dry pearl from House of Kolor mixed in. The red is Ford Redfire Pearl. It's a, I think, 2003 color. The blue is GM Atlantic Blue Pearl. I think 2006. The yellow was more complicated. It's Ford School Bus Yellow mixed with a touch of Performance red, a few drops of black and silver and a glop of Alabaster dry pearl. It's a one of a kind color. Sort of a, "hmm, another couple of drops of black, maybe" kind of thing. The silver is BMW metallic Deep Silver.

It all looks flat right now and will until the topcoat is sprayed on. Hopefully, it brings out the pearl highlights. And the tone of the red, white and yellows colors, since they are somewhat transparent, is substantially changed since they are shot over metallic silver.

I'm happier with the colors that I thought I was going to be for awhile. The yellow was shot on before the blue and it looked like an Arizona State SunDevils uniform. But with the blue, it seems to work OK. Just a bit of pearl black to highlight a couple of areas and I can finally shoot on some clear and seal it down and start inking. There are also a couple of touch up areas. If you look close at the top of the outboard stabilizer toward the tip, you can see where the white pealed. It's sanded, but will have to be re-shot.

Man, shooting paint in cold and humid air is a bear.

edit for comment

Almost forgot. The canopy is 2004 Cadillac metallic bronze over pearl black. Looks better in person.

Bill,

I just went in for a physical. hadn't had a complete physical in a long time and have reached that age where you have to go have things checked out. After all the various tests (and some are extremely unpleasant), the verdict was, I'm not in too bad a shape for an old guy.

I told the doc, it's not the age or even the mileage, it's the road I've traveled.

My foot's been killing me lately.

I couldn't face a cold shop tonight, so no work this day. But I should have it ready for ink, lettering and such by the weekend. Once that's done, I just have to wait for the weather to shoot clear. Then I can pack it off to Tucson with my buddy.

Randy.
I feel your pain! some days after paying attention to details all day on the drawings for the building, and trying to keep two dozen discrete dimensions in my head while I work on the other end of the building, and my tailbone hurts from sitting all day in front of the computer, I just dont have the mindset to sit at the bench and work on the beast,, so what do I do,,
two guess', Im here on the puter working on details in CAD for the landing gear, cowling and a myriad of other details for her,, go figure. Going out of town for the weekend, up to see the folks in Okanogan. Dad wants me to build him a plastic model of a plane he worked on in the airforce, F-86D model. He painted all the squadron logos on the airplanes while he was stationed at Gieger feild. Real reason for the trip is hes down with pnemonia, so going to visit. No work for me on the 109 till next week. I will be monitoring your progress from there,, I expect great things from you lad,,
do you have your "nose" art ready ?

Bill,

>>I can tell ya one thing, Brother!  That Cobra looks much, much better, IMHO, now than when it was yellow!<<

I'm crushed. I liked the yellow. Just not the quality of the finish. While not spectacularly better, this one is at least presentable. This will probably be a 15 or 16 point plane. I can live with that.

Mark,

Good luck with your Dad. Hope he's feeling better.

I've had surgery on my knee, both feet (one was pretty extensive), fractured vertebrae, torn muscles, surgery resulting from a wound, two concussions and a myriad of stitched cuts and various mild joint injuries. I understand the sitting (or staying in any position) for too long. Like I say, it's the road traveled (what possessed me to think that jumping off Glacier Point with a hang glider was a good idea?)

Probably no "nose art" as such. I do have some interesting highlights to put on. And I will probably give this a decent inking, depending on how the surface is after a coat of two of clear.

Don,

Thanks. The colors are interesting. Better in person. The bronze on the canopy is actually a very neat color when you see it in person. I may have to use that as a color on a future plane.

I have always loved white stunters with Bronze..."Taheejun' Orange"....Gold etc...bordered by black, dark red or brown to seperate the Gold.
Also might consider using a mask of screen like material ovef a gold base...followed by that Bronze..etc...AIRBRUSH SHADOWIN' WITH MASKING RULES...if done right...but looks really crappola if the masking moves or releases in the wrong spots...
Lots of testing needed however to avoid the  accidental stuff> H^^

best wishes and best of luck and good vibes...brotha Randy

Hi Dennis,

The clear went on today and it looks pretty good overall. Nice effect with a touch of dry pearl in the clear. Now I just have to sand a bit and put on the inklines and such. Then I can wait for decent weather and shoot on the catalyzed polyurethane. WooHoo!!

Looking forward to the finished product - you still looking good one weight & such?

Dennis,

Yea, so far OK. Projected weight is about 44 or 45 oz. Should be fine.

This will probably be a 15 or 16 point plane. Not my best effort. I promise I will never try to put a finish on a plane in the dead of winter again. Just too much humidity. I've had enormous problems with the thing. I will be glad to see it done.

Youknow Randy,
I find it interesting, Painting in the winter, you can have the temp in the shop 70 degrees and it will take forever to dry, in the summer, it can be 65 degrees and it dries tons faster! Not sure why that is, but it sure does hold true in my experience too, of course humidity is a significant factor in dry times as well.

Yea, when the air is almost wetter than the water ...

It was 87% humidity when I was shooting the colors. Caused no end of problems. I've started inking it and will apply some decals (of sorts) tonight.

Aw, Heck, Mark, it is probably only a 19 point plane and Randy is too embarrassed to show it.................  you know how he is, if it ain't worth at least 21 points, it's a disaster!

Trust me, Bill, it's isn't a 19 point plane. Like I said, 15 or 16 maybe. Overall presentation should be OK.

I've been out sick for a couple of days. Man, my son has got to stop having his friends come over when they are dying of plague.  :)

I plan to get back out to the shop today.

I've been out sick for a couple of days. Man, my son has got to stop having his friends come over when they are dying of plague.  :)

I plan to get back out to the shop today.

Shultzie,

Don't worry, I'll keep plugging away. I plan to get the details worked out tonight and hopefully do some minimal inklines. If the weather ever clears up, I'll shoot clear on it.

Time to shoot the clear, glue on the control surfaces, and call it good!  If i could do it to my Vulcan, I KNOW you can do it to the Cobra.  At the NATS, the Vulcan would get about 12 points, maybe.  And that's a fact.  I just got sick of looking at it and wanted to fly it!  All the mess ups are visible when you pick it up, but I wasn't going to live long wenough to fix them all!  And from 10 feet, it looks as good as any of them!  Even better at 62 feet! (I can't see a single divot in the paint at 62 feet away when it's flying......)

Bill,

Yea, I'm getting there. I just printed off my third set of decals. The first, for reasons unknown, I ended up with a bunch of fisheyes in the clear on the decals. The second set seemed fine, but I much not have gotten enough clear on them. I had a lot of problems with bleed and for some reason (never happened before), the decal setting solution caused the print to blur. Again, probably because there wasn't enough clearcoat on them.

I just printed out a third set and did find out something interesting. I've been using Word in Windows for years because the print drivers in Linux didn't allow the use of all the features of the printer. With the latest upgrade, I discovered that now not only do I have complete control of the printer, but can control some features that I couldn't through Windows. This is without a doubt the sharpest and best set of decals I've ever printed out.

Now, if I can just not screw them up when I clearcoat them.
