Juhani Kari's original models..
« on: March 22, 2013, 01:13:16 PM »
 Hi.

On my recent contest trip I stopped by at the Finnish aviation museum to take some pictures of their collection of Juhani Kari's models. At the moment they are stored in the basement, not in the public exhibition.
The orange-black Nakke has some damage; part of vertical fin missing and some later repair attempts in the nose turtle deck. All models have their cowling missing, but I understand that Kari was known for flying without the cowl.
The red-black-white Thunderbird was used to win Silver medal at 1962 World Champs in Kiev USSR.
The orange-black Nakke also won a silver medal at 1964 WCh in Budapest, Hungary.
The third model is a trike Nakke. It was used in European Champs in Belgium (1965?).

Lots of great shots there Are there any plans to try to restore the models or just to continue to preserve them?

Hi Lauri,

Thanks for posting these pictures!  Kerkko (sp?) sent me a picture of the orange/black Nakke as it sits now.  This was several years ago, maybe even in the '90s.

Hi.

It's difficult to say what will be done to the models, it seems that the museum doesn't have much interest in investing into model airplane restauration. They do have lots of differend models but fixing them is up to volunteer work.
At least the models seem to be in a safe place now.
Here is some more pictures of their collection, including 2 models from 2-time Wakefield world champion Aarne Ellilä, the free world champion (free flight power class) winning model #18 of S.Pimenoff, and a (team?) world champion A-2 glider from M.Tähkäpää.
The rather nice Spacehound is from an unknown Russian builder, I try to find out the name as I go to Moscow next week. The other one with a funny shaped fin is Elias Mayer's Condrad.

Hi Lauri,

Thanks, again, for the pictures.

Do you know how Kerkko is doing and is he still flying?

Thanks!

Propably not, but it's maybe possible to track the builder with the number in wing. I'll see next week if V. Salenek can offer any help. I'm supposed to see him in Moscow. L

Juri Sirotkins model at the '61 Criterium of Europe.

The model was the last of the 'Mockba' (Moscow) series and had a deep bellied fuselage with no cockpit. It was the immediate predecessor of the 'Spacehound'. The motor was the MVVS 35 stunt motor, developed from the 29 racing motor with a rear intake. It was run on a 10x4 prop at quite high revs.

Though the Number on sirotkins spacehound is  1 9 6 2 2 2  .

Thanks for that, Matt!
The yellow plane has licence number 196911 on it, no far from Sirotkin's number. And it's also from Moscow. L

Hi Matt,

At the '64 World's Juri's model also had "MOCKBA" on the wing and was #22.  There is a picture of Juri holding the model (while wearing a Speedo!) in Aeromoddler's coverage of the WC's.  Don't know for sure if he referred to the model as "Spacehound" or not.
