Jim Kostecky's 1966 Talon
« on: February 24, 2012, 12:18:34 PM »
I recently got some pix of Jim Kostecky's 1966 Talon from Jim's flying buddy, Greg Zajack - thoughbt other folks might like seeing them.  Obviously the 46 year old bird is a bit worse for wear but still cool as heck.  Also, it helps show how cool Joe Dill's new version (see the thread on it below somewhere) is, as far as being representative of the original's trim scheme.

Jim also had Talon's painted in pale green, and one in black which was repainted in silvery blue - I do not have pix on those.

Speaking of Gary Letsinger...and his love for Talons! I am certain he will enjoy these as well. I will call him today and give him a heads up on this forum post.

I WAS WONDER THAT VERY SAME THING? Randy!

(ABOUT YOUR MELTING DECALS!!! SOOO SORRY! BUT I CAN'T HELP MYSELF!! I HAVE TO KIDNAP THIS POST...SIMPLY BECAUSE BOTH JOE AND I FELT SO STRONGLY ABOUT THAT DECAL PROBLEM...during the years we were serving our incarceration time behind the barbed wire fences at the wind tunnel.

I TOO... FEEL YOUR PAIN! When it comes to painting over decals too quickly...

WOW! what memories that brings back....years ago at that darned wind tunnel
.

During those "between wind tunnel runs" often our NASA and MILITARY customers would want us to perform a QUICK GLAMOUR DECAL JOB over those REALLY RIPE AND FRESHLY PAINTED force models while in flight test mode. Knowing that not only would these decals would soon pull away and blow down the tunnel...so with that in mind....We would lightly spray clear coat over them with our little Iwata detail airbrushes--KNOWING PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY MUCH FOR CERTAIN...that not only would they quickly dissolve quickly and fly waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the tunnel, even at low speeds!!!
EVEN MUCH WORSE...(EVEN THOUGH THE CUSTOMER WOULD ALWAYS THINK THEY WERE RIGHT??)
Because of that....were risking MORE SERIOUS DAMAGE to the carefully applied  precise coating thickness of basis paint on those high speed NASA test models, which would mean another couple of hours of overtime paint re-work-------BEFORE those WAAAY OVER BUDGET MIDNIGHT MODEL TEST RUNS could begin again.

Hey, Dennis! ;D  What is the base color of the original?  Is it a light Lemon Yellow or does it have a green tint to it?

THANKS!

Thanks, Dennis.  I seemed to remember the build article saying something about "green". ???

...having recently 'found' copies both TALON and FORMULA S FM articles (in adobe .pdf format. Interested?)...

...the refrence to pistachio ice cream was in TALON, as the cause of intense stomach distress and diaharrea/nausea! Sure you want that association?

Thanks to all for info on Jim K's TALON!

I saw the "green one" in 1966 at Bunker Hil AFB.
It was and still is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my life.
I see people my age out there climbing mountains and zip lining and here I am feeling good about myself because I got my leg through my underwear without losing my balance
