Jack's Skyrocket

Some time ago someone wanted this and I emailed them but never hears from them so I am posting it here. It took a long time to find this and it is only a 1/4 view. I did make a high res copy but am not putting it here as it is to large. If you want the high res copy email me and I will send it to you.

I believe I am the "somone" you mentioned.  I posted that I had the articles for the Skyrocket and a few other Sheeks birds and asked if anyone had the actual FS plans since FM no longer showed them as available. 

Got your email offering the scan - and THOUGHT I had responded - but obviously I did not - so my apologies for keeping you hanging.  However, on the plus side you have it posted for anyone else who's interested!



All I want to REALLY know is WHEN IS FRANK C BUILDING THE SKYROCKET!!!

I think that Skyrocket could easily be framed up over the Thanksgiving Vacation!

I-Beam, one top block............. three days!  What engines did Jack use?

It's a interesting plane but I don't see it being a great performer. Small flaps and tail and most likely nose heavy.

Just found Jacks F5F1 Skyrocket plan on the AMA Plan Service: AMA Plan #31918 Pond #82C4.  Tommorrow I'll try to order and see what happens!

You are probably right, but its a TWIN!  If I actually build, it would probably be electric, might just cheat a little & extend the flap span...

Last month when I was talking to Jack about details of the Sea Vixen, he mentioned that he would not publish an airplane unless it flew well.

We did not talk about specific airplanes, or each airplanes actual characteristics.

It still will  great to see as many of Jack's airplanes as possible at VSC XX.

Gotta agree, Jack never published a "bad" airplane but some were probably easier to optimize than others.  The Skyrocket is a big case in point.

The biggest problem with twins is everything just gets so darned complicated - and heavy!  This may be a case where modern power systems could really save the day.  I'll bet this would fly with modern 25's.  Better still, make it electric and most all of the OPERATIONAL complication gets nipped in the bud.  Then you just gotta be a zealot about the weight!

I think ALL classic era stuff benefits from modern control systems too. The flaps are short in span but fairly wide.  Extending them to the outboard sides of the nacelles would be fairly painless.  The extra flap span would help carry weight AND help control speed.

Other possible changes: the full scale F5F had a very slight vee in the stab.  Originally the fuselage did not extend past the leading edge of the wing, and I think the nacelles were shorter in back.  So make all these changes - and it is not Jack's classic anymore...

I would predict that whoever brings one of these to VSC will have a real crwod pleaser and the inside track on the Sheeks award!

Hi Dennis,

To tell the "whole truth, and nothing but the truth", this is the first TWIN I hav really been interested in to want to actually build one! ;D  I have always, ALWAYS, wanted a twin engined stunter.  But the closest one I have considered so far is Jack's Mosquito.  But it looks very time consuming on the plans.

The Sky rocket, on the other hand, looks a LOT simpler! y1

Two OS FP or LA 25s or Brodak 25s would haul the mail as well as the Foxes, thought maybe not with quite the same "run" characteristics.  Two OS 25Fs would be a LOT more power.

Build the USAAF version. It had a longer nose for some Madsen 20 MM guns.  I have a Monogram Model of it. Very simple paint, all silver, plus numbers. Plus it has cute rudders.  LL~ H^^

No, I just clicked the pic of the plans above and noticed right in front and below the spinner it notes power is provided by two Fox 35's.  If you're using Internet Explorer there should be a little magnifying glass at the lower right corner of the screen with 100% next to it and a little arrow pointing down.  Click the arrow and select whatever magnification you want.  It makes it a lot easier to see the fine details.

Wynn Robins emailed me a scan of the magazine plans of Jack's Skyrocket. I was interested, but never saw the article before. I would have to shorten the nose and extend the flaps, so decided against it. Have you got hold of a plan ?

Two OS max .30s wouldnt break the bank .Probly full span flaps ? fixed 1/4 sheet behind thje airfoil dosnt
do a lot for the lift .

You do know that the Army version flew only once. It caught fire on it's maiden flight and was destroyed.
