I wonder why it didn't catch on?

I noticed that Dave Platt's Parakeet is going to be flown at Brodaks this year. It's a unique and attractive plane, reminisent of a definite British influence on stunt design of the 60's. I hope it does well, it should, 'cause it looks right to me.

Earlier this year there was a survey on a possible kit of this plane, but not much interest was shown, so it was passed over. Perhaps the wide exposure it will have at Brodaks meet will create some interest.

I took some pictures of it during January, I hope you enjoy looking at them.

Just a guess but I believe that this model came at the end of Dave Platts C/L interest and he had moved into R/C.
I can't find a single mention of the model in any of my 60's model mags.

1) It's the Bearcat fin/rudder with the Midget Mustang cowl. The Oriental fuselage and canopy are fine. The thick  wheel panties are butt ugly.
2) It's the orange tissue and black trim (both will fade like crazy!).
3) It's the blue jumpsuit.
4) It's the jumpsuit, no matter what color.
5) I don't recall any size or power information being given, or projected kit price. Could be wrong, but size matters. LL~
6) Add your own thoughts here....

However with the leadouts sooooooooooo far forward as shown in that photo....it would amaze me that it lived to fly a second fright-flight?

I dunno John, its a nice enough design from a gifted designer.... but it just doesn't make my heart go pitter-patter!

I would have liked to fly the original. It was a very decent weight. Yeah, it didn't look like much more than a midget racer with a large rudder, but the numbers looked good.

The one that went to Brodaks was a new one, i've been told, that may have had some problems.

Well, I guess it's one of those things.

I myself like the looks of it.  It looks more like an airplane than some I have seen.  Wasn't Dave on the British team when he was still there?   DOC Holliday

I think Dave had given up C/L in favour of R/C scale when he left these shores in '68. I saw him win the '66 nationals
in R/C scale with a NA T28 powered by a McCoy 60! I think he also flew in a demonstration R/c F1 race.
He was in the British team in the '50's flying stunt. I have a couple of his designs next to me, the Spectre, and Talon, kitted in the '50's by Keil Kraft

Dave flew OTS at the Virginia Beach Nats in the 80's with an 'Ambassador' Ollie Tiger powered.   He let me fly it after the event and I was very impressed   H^^ H^^ H^^

I met Dave at the CL Scale NATS in the mid 1980's.
The next year he was having trouble with his engine in his OT stunter.  A small British design with a diesel engine up front.  Dave asked me to fly it so he could start it and watch how it flew.  That diesel engine moved it much faster than any stunter I had ever flew.  After a few level laps, I thought I might as well try it out.  Just as I pulled up for a loop the engine quit.  Full down to keep it upright.  Smooth landing.  The problem turned out to be a broken solder joint on the fuel pickup line at the tank. 
Dave had to wash all of the diesel fuel out of the inside of the model and resolder the line. 

The strangest thing was that he had used only clear dope over silk span and the diesel fuel turned it transparent.  You could see every part in the body.

I saw this plane fly and have some pictures of it. Dave had it at the Vintage contest at Melbourne Fl around 1992. It was very light maybe covered with Jap tissue.I think it had a small motor and tended to be a floater. More like a free flight on lines.At that meet we had vintage team racing also and Dave put most of his efforts in that event. He had a lot of motor problems with it. It was Barnstormer size.
