Harold Price's Defiant
« on: August 04, 2009, 01:32:40 AM »
Does anyone remember seeing Harold and this model?  I was taken by it when it first appeared and just recently finally obtained plans.  A lot of unusual aspects (for the day) in it.  Very *fat* airfoil, flaps were part of the airfoil, etc., but that greenhouse is way cool! ;D  I was attracted to Walt M.'s Stunting Vicker's Wellesley/b], also! LL~

Any pictures and thoughts will be appreciated.

Bill, is this the same plane that is in the Flying Models that featured Jack Sheek's LaDonna article?

I think Geoge Gaydos had the canopy molds. But unfortunalely George passed away as a very young man. I have no idea what happened to the molds. Maybe Windy know.

It is a modeler's model.... quite detailed ... in the same vein as the Warburton Tony.. and some of the other scale stunters from 1960-68.. PT-19.. PT-20 Ryan.. Hi Johnson Stuka (came a little earlier)..

Thanks for the magazine referral.  I have th eplans and a copy of the article.  It is a wicked looking model!  I built the Warburton Tony in 1971 and really enjoyed it.

The magazine article published the plans on a two-page spread.  I cannot scan this unless you want to see the thing on two separatate sheets, and might loose some detail in the process.

A rather complicated model.

My Dad had built a Cleveland(?) rubber scale model of the Defiant and got an urge to build a stunter.  He was gathering up 3 views and making drawings when Harold's Defiant was published - Dad lost interest in doing his.

The signature piece of the Defiant is the canopy and gun turret.  Mr Price did a phenomenal job with that.  I was always curious why he made the constant thickness wing ending in the football shaped tip rib.  I do not think any of his other designs exhibited that feature.

I never got to see Harold's Defiant fly, bet it looked GREAT in the air...
