I didn't buy one of these when they were $4.95, or now for about $69, but I did pop for a set of Brodak plans and start building one for Foxberg race.   When the rules changed it went to the back burner, but now it's thawed out as Classic/profile stunter. 

The first thing that hit me when I started building was, "this thing has a lot of wing area".  Probably too much for a racer, but maybe not a bad stunter.

Hi Paul,

Danny Banjock has a Cosmic Wind (don't know, but it looked like an original) which he races.

The original Golberg plans had "Customizing Tips" in one corner.  It shows light ply wheel pants (silhouette) on dural LG.  If you would like a copy of this area of the original plans, let me know.

I found it to be the smoothest stunting of the three Goldberg Goodyear Racers.

We also had one of these, back in the day. Brother Dave built it and covered it in that bright pink silk that was around at the time and then he mounted a plain bearing ST .35 on it that had been gently modified. I remember watching the wing really flex as it whipped around at 105 miles per hour. It was a great plane to take out on those days that you just wanted to go out and have fun.

Dan's plane is a Miss Sarah from RSM, a knockoff of the Cosmic Wind, legal in Foxberg. In Foxberg Dan flies it with a carefully broken in screamer of a Fox 35. Doing very well last year at Brodak until Mike Palko caught the plane wrong and trashed the outside wing. Dan rebuild it quick, flying it again a week or two later. With a toned down Fox 35, the plane is still fast and lots of fun. No problem for Dan to do a pattern. He may have even cut a pattern in competition with it, not sure. The Brodak version is a similar knockoff of the CG kit, also Foxberg legal. Updated construction. With the right wood should make a light fun sport plane. In the right hands it'll do a decent pattern, I'm sure. Definitely competitive in Foxberg. My Buster, an earlier Brodak update of the CG kit, flies way better than it should. Turns tight without slowing down, corners decent. Points well. Mine is powered by a Tower 40 usually run full out. Silly fast and fun. The all up weight of my Buster is under 29ounces even with the weighty engine. The Brodak kit wood was almost too good. Had to watch my clubby fingers. The fues was very light. Plane has held up real well tho. Dope and silkspan on the fues. Monokote on the wings.

I saw Dan's Cosmic Wind.  It was a nice job, maroon with white trim just like the box art & the prototype.   Putting white pin striping & lettering on top of a dark base coat must have been quite a job, maybe too much for 4-up racing.

I don't plan on pouring that much effort into the finish, but mine will have plenty of orginality.  Power will (of course) be a K&B Greenhead 35  with a Big Art muffler and a veeerrry small venturi.

This will not be a box art paint job.

I have long been interested in the Curtiss Hawk.  My interest was further increased by some photos I found in the archives of the Selfridge Air Museum.  The Cos' has a basic profile that could pass for a 'Hawk.

The red hawk  takes the concept of a "bird feeder" up to the next level.

Here it is, in "ARF condition" ready for final assembly.  It kinda looks like an ARF ready-to-assemble, but it's not.  I guess if I sold it to somebody right now, it would be "ARF-legal".

Anyway, the paint job is a hybrid of the prototype scheme and the Layfayette Esquadrille, to the limits of my bench stock of MonoKote.  "Hybrid" is the new PC term we have to use 'cause crossbreed, mongrel, and mutt are too insensative.  The insignia and marking are on "hold" for a printer replacement.

As it sits now the airframe weights 14.8 and the landing gear is 2.4, for a total of 17.8.  If it comes in nose-heavy, I'll have to do something about lightening the gear, maybe drill holes, shorten it, or replace it with something lighter, if I can find such a thing.

The tailplane can't be finished until after final assembly.  I need to snake in the flipper, then slide in the stab, then hinge and cover it.

I was trying to swear off ironing and become a painter, but that talk of six-hour taping jobs knocked me off the wagon and into an iron-on backslide.

Don't worry about the $cote, I don't think anyone really cares anymore about whether or not the model is painted or monocoted except for the front row at the NATS.  And IIRC, there have been $cote planes there, too.

Do whatever makes you happiest as far as finishing goes.

It's ready to fly, less a fuel tank.  That probably won't happen until the weather turns from skiing back to flying.  Current weight is 26.5 ounces.  With a Big Art muffler and one of my tanks, its should still be under 30.  If it comes in nose heavy, I'll attack the 2.4 ounces in the Sig Fazor landing gear struts.

The finish is all MonoKote, 'cept for Hobby Poxy in the engine department and FasCal over the stickers.  I might take beating form the "painters" at some contests, but that's better than taking a pounding from my wife all winter if I try to dope in the house.  Just between us, I don't like the smell all that much either.  Now that's I'm over 21, I don;t need the MEK.

A jack of all trades,,, Foxberg race, profile stunt, classic stunt, CLPA, profile scale, Jim Walker, and few sport plane events in Lansing.  Now I can buy a smaller car.

Looks great Paul.  Hope it flies as well, of course all your planes fly well.  But, isn't the colors a little hard to see?  Had one of JJ's planes done in day glo colors and the rashin we got was horrendous.  MERRY CHRISTMAS,  DOC Holliday

The colours might be little on the ugly side, but they are pretty close to the "South Carolina War Games" camo in the documentation.    At least they're will be no issue of BOM and I'll be able to find it in the pits.
