Gieseke Nobler progress
« on: January 29, 2008, 11:43:19 PM »
Here is the slow but steady progress of my hopefully VSC bound UHP Gieseke Nobler.

I carved the cowling out of the provided single block just to say I did!

That is really a great job working that cowl and top blocks.  The kit I had contained blocks I thought were a little harder than I would have liked for the amount of carving required, but you made it look easy there.

If you actually find any pictures from his World Champ win, (I believe) you'll find the winning airplane didn't have that "open mouth" cowling. In an old Round and Round article it explains how Bob messed up the plane he was going to take to the worlds, and then took an old one off the wall (without the mouth) and proceeded to win the WC.

But, I've been wrong before.... b1

But your carving IS beautiful.

Thanks guys,
Ward; I couldn't find a good view of Bob's cowlings, so I winged it. At first it looked like a Gypsy, but Roy DeCamara gave me some pointers on the phone and that is how it shaped up. I'm going to make it a little more square in the final shaping, it's pretty roughed-in right now.

Hey...Chris
Here is a scan from my "PIECE OF S--T" new worthless CHEEPEEE' $79.00 HP4180 ALL IN NOTHING PRINTER SCANNER. (ANOTHER REALLY HORRIFIC STORY IN ITSELF) of Mark Freeman's beautiful Gieske Nobler with the side mouted engine arrangement...that not only looked awesome but also flew just as well.

What a rotten photo of one outstandly beautiful candy apple red stunter. Mark Freeman, who not only built the most beautiful scale models...but his stunters  were also total works of pure sky art.

Donaldo,

LOL. You make me laugh.
Yes, that is truly a crap photo, but thank you for it. The model is beautiful! LOL...(I can't stop.)

You know, Dad has an "all-in-nothing" printer/scanner/fax POS, and a very similar price he paid! I think there is a reason for the price.

You guys make me laugh, it is just like I am 10 again. I guess that is well for me!

I resurrect this so Clint won't feel bad. UHP kit finally in clear, buffing it out right now, engine is an AeroTiger .36.

I loved building this but never could get it all together at once. Here it was year before last with a new fuselage, the original was found bent into a banana.

I was trying to finish this for 3 years now but there was always something. Now it's at least in one piece. I used Sig dope and sanding sealer. Then for finish the Pattern ace and finish master Kevin Gribben makes a line of base coat/clear coat paint for us modelers under the name Wings West. Available in spray cans or bottles to be mixed and sprayed I tried both. The white primer went on well out of the spray can.

The smaller color cans didn't come out as controlled. I had no recourse but to continue on spraying as it came out heavy and in big blotches instead of the nine fine spray and fan pattern of the big primer can. Got it covered though.

Here it all went to crap. The white primer is also a great trim. I back masked the white trim in old masking tape, and it bled under and made a mess with the red spray can being so heavy. Removed all of the tape, scraped every inch of the edge with many, many new Xacto knife blades and then remasked all of the model with brand new blue 3M Fineline.
The blue was sprayed into a bottle and thinned with acetone, then shot through my airbrush. Here we recovered to fine, clean paint edges and were back on track. My collection of decals are getting really old, like 50 years plus for some and I had to have them remade in vinyl and on we went finally.

After this the plan went well except that family man, respected pharmacist and Rochester philharmonic bassist Tony Passannante, Laura's father and my longtime friend died at 93 years and we went to California to be there in hospital, with him at the time and funeral right up until the day Classic started at VSC when we returned home to Tucson. I took care of Laura and just showed at the field for the social aspects.
The Nobler languished again. Finally with a trim gun it was shot with DuPont clear.
I'm buffing it out now, an interesting journey not very similar to the old acrylic lacquer days. I started with 2000 the first panel, wow, too coarse. The 3000 was much better, but the buff is still tough. I'll figure it out...

Thanks Chris, now I shouldn't have to hear about how slow I am.

The Nobler came out beautiful!

Thanks Clint.
Yours looks like it's coming out very well.
This thread was too choice, with Ward and Don now gone, I had to bump it back up.

Ty,
As per my posts, Wings West True Red, base coat, clear coat system for modelers. It matches Monokote.  Easy to use, best if bought in bottles and sprayed with a gun. That finish is over their white primer.
