Nils new ride
« on: April 22, 2008, 09:53:20 AM »
This is a pic sent to me by Nils Norling of his new plane. A Tempest from an RSM kit. Looks very cool to me. Power is going to be a hybrid OS engine. A 53. Hmmm. Could be interesting. This is Nils first dope finish in about, well, in a long time. He did some really nice work.

Mark,

Yea, Nils did a really nice job of it. I'm working on him now to rub it out, but he's sort of burned out with it for the moment. I suppose that could be for later. I have some other pictures, but they are not reduced. The cockpit is particularly nice. I also like Johnny Depp (in his Pirates of the Caribbean mode) as the pilot.   ;D

Here's another view, but I did it at work (resize) and it's not spectacular.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it. If I figure out how to post pictures I have lots more. It's built from plans using RSM laser cut ribs & spar. It was a challenging build but I'm pleased with it so far. It has interchangeable aluminum block engine mounts of the type Randy Powell uses. I can mount the .53 or any other engine with FP.40 mount spacing on one set & the other set fits the Super Tigre G-21 .46 bolt pattern. Either engine type will have the correct spinner spacing. The .53 was built by Bob Jones using a Magnum .40 case & O.S. & Thunder Tiger piston/crank/rod/liner. Mix & match. It is essentially a .53 built in a .40 case with a hand made head. It's 12 grams lighter than an ST.46.

Nils,

Well, at least the engine is creative. I can't wait to see it run.

I want to see it run too Randy!
If anyone else is interested in building a Tempest the plans were drawn by John Miller & they are very well done. The laser cut ribs & spar from RSM were a great investment. Accurately cutting all those notches by hand would have been very difficult.

Hummm?
Bart Klapinski flew the pants off everyone there at the 67 Nats with his McCoy 40's (if I am not mistaken!) Wind was purty high and Bart NAILED IT TO  US ALL!

I have had the priviledge of judging Bart Klapinsky at a recent local contest. You could see the class right away. Bart has an unusually steady hand. He is also VERY GOOD in the wind.

I asked Nils recently how the Tempest flies. He replied that he's yet to complete it, being busy practising and getting his equipment all dialed in for defending his two consecutive Oregon State Championships. Some sort of pistol shooting...I'm not up on that stuff, tho. I have hopes that once the shooting competition is over, Nils will finish his Tempest and come out to fly at Fallies!   H^^ Steve
