Freedom 45 roll-out, test flights
« on: February 27, 2008, 12:07:10 PM »
We finally got it in the air last Sunday.  Still many trim issues, mostly getting the CG moved far enough back, first flight wouldn't do a loop!  The lead outs are already all the way against the leading edge, I'll just keep adding tail weight until it works, or not.
The engine runs very well.  LA 46, 11.25 x 4 Bolly, 4.25 oz. Powermast RoJett blend yields 7 minute flight.
We are leavnig for VSC this Saturday and plan to stop in Salem for more testing.

Yea, Mike is nice enough to haul my sled to VSC. Nice guy.

The Freedom 45 looks really cool in the air. And there's plenty of room in the back for tail weight.   :D

Should be fine.

Mike that is absolutely beautiful and I am sure you will get it in trim in no time.  I am so sorry that I will not get to see it fly.

Tell you what, while you are hangin with Randy at VSC kick him in the patootie and tell him to build the SuperSonic so you will BOTH have swept wingers!

I have no idea but should find out from Jack next week.  When I was building I thought about moving the lead outs so they came out in front of the leading edge, but decided to keep to the plans. I'll just keep on adding tail weight until it behaves, or won't get off the ground!  The paint scheme I replicated from the magazine article as close as I could; it was black and white.

I'm hoping that as you move the CG back with will also take care of your leadout position concerns.

...and I STILL think Randy needs to build the SuperSonic (after the Shoestring and after painting the original design he has waiting...)

Was talking to Bob Whitely about the Freedom 45 and he said it was coming in on second corner of hour glass.  Said they thought it was fixed until the third corner and it came straight down.  No chance of saving it.  It was such a gorgeous plane.  Looked much better than the pictures.  DOC Holliday

Yea, I saw the wreckage. Tough break for Mike. He vows to rebuild it. His backup was the J.D. Falcon. It flies really well, so he went with that. Got in a flight in the wind and washing machine that is circle 1.

I didn't see it happen, but sure was sad news. It got my vote for the Pilots Choice Award at appearance judging.

I was there examining the pieces. As I told Mike, anything can be rebuilt. Just depends on your motivation and whether it was heavy to start. A rebuild is almost always heavier. Mike is considering it.

I talked to Bart Kaplinski (Hope that is spelled right) after the crash he really felt bad, but there wasn't a thing he could do.  He hit that third turn on the hourglass and it just fell our of the sky.  Had it been a lesser pilot I would wonder, but they just don't get much better than Bart.  Yes it was a beautiful work of art, I really hope he gets it rebuilt and corrects whatever was the problem.

I flew in the same circle (between the berms grass circle) right after Bart. And had the same thing happen. I was lucky in that the plane made the 3rd turn then got pushed out so I was able to recover. Unfortunately, Bart got hammered prior to the turn and it just fell on him. At least a portion of the problem was the circle in combination with both aircraft being overweight (mine more than Mike's plane). Tough deal, as I said. I felt bad for Bart. Regardless of circumstances and ability to avoid it, it never feels good to spalt someone else's plane.

Bart Klapinski at the handle is like General Yeager (in his prime) at the stick - it just don't get any better!  No doubt in my military mind that this incident was unavoidable.  Mike, it got my vote at VSC, hope you rebuild it!
