New Dolphin born
« on: February 02, 2015, 08:57:26 AM »
I wanted to do a quick and simple classic machine so I could get on to another F2b project so I built the Dolphin from an original Jetco kit.  Fox,  38 ounces.  Never had one before but wish I did as a youngster.  Better than a profile but nearly as easy to build and known to be a good flier.  All original except I replaced the wing sheeting and flaps.

 Looks great Dave, Fox .35?

I've always liked the Dolphin design. I had a brand new Dolphin kit given to me way back in Junior High by my mom's uncle or something. I never bothered building it, practically all the wood in the kit was hard as a rock and very heavy. Thinking back, that might be why it was given away. I always held on to it though and about 8 or 10 years ago I ended up using the rib set in my original design "Old Fokker" and scrapped the rest.
Narrowly averting disaster since 1964!

Yes Wayne a 1960 era Fox .35.  I was surprised at how light some of the wood actually was though 'looked' heavy due to aging.  The flaps would make better stairs tho and the wing sheet was so hard it would hardly bend over the ribs so they were replaced.  Even used the sixty year old cloth hinges and silk span.  The plans show an alternative 4" bellcrank so I did put in one of my Delrin jobs.  I bushed and JB'd the spot-welded horns.  Turned into a fun three week project.  I do think think would be a great alternative for those in the Ringmaster,  Twister,  Pforce  cycle.  Anything from the Veco .19 to the ageless Fox .35 would be great in it.

Dave,

A Dolphin w/Veco .19BB won a lot of events in the old WAMS Class A Stunt Event!  Flew them as good as anything!  That is what I wanted to do if I built a Dolphin. ;D

Todd Lee has/had a beautiful, light Dolphin with a Fox .35.  At the East Coast Oldie Goldies one year he was doing consecutive "40 point" square cloverleafs! LOL!!

Jim you know we've been there and done that!  Wonder why I build and build.....and build.  It's slowing down though.  This year he'll be flying more of his own stuff.  Eventually earthquakes DO happen.

I think I had the first Dolphin kit to hit the KC area.   Built the kit and had Fox 35 Stunt that thought it was a racing engine.   Yes it was heavy but would fly when others were left on the ground.

John I only remember seeing one Dolphin in the area in the old days.  Think it was metallic green- was that yours?

Dave,
You will enjoy flying your Dolphin. I built one a couple of years ago. My Dolphin was lucky enough to make the cover of Flying Model mag.

John that's very pretty!  I bailed out on too much paint detail on mine because I'm lazy.... Well I was unhappy with the weight of one of my new take-apart ships so want to get started on a re-do.  I'm looking forward to flying the Dolf on the next flyable day.  The new field is still pretty rough until the new grass comes up and we work it some so this machine seemed like a good choice over other wing mounted or panted gear airplanes for this season.
Did you build from plans, kit or... What's under the hood?

Bill it seems Todd told me he gave that Dolphin to Lew to hang in his drug store in Kentucky.  No idea where it is now.

I built a green one when I was a kid. Flew it at Whittier Narrows a grand total of 6 times. Cool plane.

Dave,
Mine is electric powered. One of our club members had and old one in his attic and the nose was fuel socked from his Fox 35. So I went with electric power instead.

I think one of Todd's Dolphins is still hanging from the ceiling of Dee & Mee Hobbies in Topeka.  IIRC, Todd built at least two of them.
