Need help on I beamer build options.
« on: April 16, 2023, 01:11:32 AM »
Since I’m almost done painting the F86, I’ve gotten the urge to start another model. I had planned to do a JD Falcon, but I haven’t done an I beam plane since the Playboy in 2008, so I think it’s definitely going to be one of those. Here are the options, so what say you?

Ares
Argus
Cobra
Ballerina III
LaDonna
Colossus (winner!)
Tucker 4

I have kits for these that need to be done and I’m not getting any younger! Let’s see what the masses choose for me.

Edit* Looks like the Colossus wins with the Cobra a close second.
I’ll start on it next few weeks.

I vote for the Ares. Classic, and Billy did a how-to video on building it that StuntHangar hosts on Youtube.

I have built the Ares (5), Argus-1, Cobra-2, Colossus-1 (best of the bunch), Tucker 4 -1.. None of the others.. I assume the Colossus is a Builtright kit, if so build it.. I have an ST .51 in mine and the only problem I had at one contest is it sped up due to crap in the filter. Model flew great. It is a big model and looks beautiful on the lines.  H^^

The Tucker 4 looks great, but is a handful trying to get it trimmed. D>K

You do not see the Jack Sheeks LaDonna very much.  In my lifetime, I have seen only one.  So, if you want something out of the ordinary, go with the LaDonna.  With those twin booms, construction is probably a bit more complicated but not impossible to do.

Either the Ares or the Cobra, both cool and timeless designs.

If you want the big-an-awesome:  Colossus

If you want nostalgia-cool:  Cobra

If you want something different:  Sheik

That would be my vote. I'd be happy to have any of them in the shop, ready to fly....

So far the Cobra is in the lead with the Colossus close behind.

Hi Clint.  Having built and flown both, you will see the Colossus is an enlarged and improved Cobra.. The Cobra seems a tad short coupled by comparison.. Why not build both..? D>K

Eventually all these will get built but I really only have room for one at a time. I’ve tried doing multiple models at once but things tend to get mixed up.

Every time I've ever had two or more models going at once things definitely go backward more than forward.

I can also recommend the USA1, but it’s not on your list

That’s ok, Jim. I know the USA 1 is a very good flying plane, but I don’t find it particularly attractive.

As far as my poll goes, looks like it’ll be the Colossus that goes on the table next.
Honestly, I was seriously leaning to it anyway.

The Ares is fantastic.  I would suggest watching Sparky's Viper videos.  He has a some excellent tips for the I beam.  For example

The turtle deck is molded
The I beam he uses a parachute thread
The ribs get sewn

Well worth the time...
