This slide has been shown before but hopefully this crop will show a little cockpit detail?

Donoldo, your posting of these pictures verifies that the model qualifies as a classic design. There have been a few interested in this plane, but were under the impression that the design didn't qualify as Classic. That's now not an issue.

I think the Fly Baby showed up in 1970.  Jack had a gorgeous jet (like a full fuse Miss Saginaw) at the 69 NATs.

OF COURSE, the way Jack built, the Fly Baby COULD have been built in '69...?

Found the pix, I THINK this was Jack's 1969 ship....

I was standing talking with Lew McFarland and if I remember...this model had been built for some time...but not finished until around the spring of 69?

I didn't attend the 70 nats...so how did I take that photo?  n~

OK Dennis, the blue jet like plane is my next Sheeks airplane, known as the Scotsman. I've never seen it in color before, it's superb.

So Donoldo, is the fly baby old enough to beclassic?

John:
I do not know if this jet had a name, but it was ot the Scotsman, which was a swept wng D-tube, wing planform same as Torino except for the flaps...

Also note the fantastic jet tube work - the shape reminds me more of a straight winged Phantom.

But back to the subject at hand,. someones GOT to build a Fly Baby!

Yes..That Funny Blue Jet thang is what Jack flew at the 69 nats...I was in the same circle as he flew. Take a look at the judges gathered around him like "flies around horse pucky or Bees on Honey.
Why he didn't score higher...don't know?
So at least here are my pictures that I took of that same funny style and profile scene with The Sheeks and the Navy brass.

NO! I WOULDN'T HOLD MY BREATH...ABOUT IT BEING A CLASSIC?
 For example:
Since I KNOW that FLY BABY  wasn't the plane he used in competition at the Philly nats...pictures here prove that..plus the sun was not shining...It was dark, windy and ready to rain all over our stunt parade.(We both were in that same staging area) check out the score sheet for that first round?

How could I ever forget that 69 nats scene because of THIS ONE SPECIAL PHOTO...Just before the rains started...here is a shot of Miss Model Aviation...caressing my old war weary Sting Ray.

Thanks Dennis and Don

I see what you are saying. The blue jet style stunter has a resemblance to the Scotsman, especially the fuselage, but the wing is totally different. Straight trailing edge, ,and an I-beamer, whereas the Scotsman is a rare "D" tube Sheeks design. The rudder, stab, and elevator, are diffeent also. More influence from the T-33 Talon it appears.

I'm going to have to call Jack and see if he has the plans still. If not, I can probably still do a new drawing based on his dimensions, and these photos.

While I'm talking to him, I'll ask him when he designed the Fly Baby. It can still be flown in the new nostalgia 70's effents that are popping up around the country.

Thanks, and cheers

Guys, if I recall correctly, the plane was referred to as his "Phantom" . I believe it was pictured in an issue of Model Airplane News Nats coverage and referred to in that way. To my knowledge, it was never published in a magazine, but it would sure be cool!!!

After looking carefully at that slide of Jack "jazzin the judges"....is that kid our Chris McMillin standing next to the Navy personell?
Even after all these years...Chris...like his father absorbed and learned so much during his formative years of attending the nats with his amazingly gifted Dad! As we know, Chris has become one of our top CLPA builders and flyers today.  Must be in the Genes'  y1 H^^
Same thang..with the Adamisin Clan. Those Daddys did let their sons to grow up to be Cowboys*...uhhh? *Stunt flyers. (Semi quoting an old country western tune) n~ LL~

attached is a shot..of Chris, standing behind his father and Rutherford.
Great looking models...huh?

OK, more good information. Phantom makes sense now. The overall look from the simulated intakes ahead of the wings leading edge, to the twin jet exhausts and tail grouping, has the look of and a family resemblance to a straight winged Phantom that had been put on a 1200 calory a day diet for a year.

For an ex Navy dude, you sure don't recognise what those two sailors are??  Note the dark blue pith helmets. The judges wore white ones. The one with the camera is a navy Photographers Mate and the other one the AA, is his assistant getting info for the Official Navy Photos of the NATS. The other tall guy is Jacks pit man and I have no idea who the runt is. His son?? H^^

LL~ LL~If that "Runt" is Chris McMillin (who I think it might be)...I would bet you your "pith helmet" and my newly aquired "DillShark" that Chris can now kick both our buttskins' off not only building beautiful models..but also kick our butt'kins of in the CLPA circle as well???! Don and Dennis

I just got off the phone with Jack and now have some good news regarding the Flybaby and the Phantom.

Jack actually designed the Flybaby in '69. He flew it at the '70 Nats. I think this may be what is needed to add it to the list of Classic designs.

As for the "Phantom", he never published it. It's a "bashed" Bernie Nash "Airion." He doesn't recall ever naming the plane, but thought that Phantom was fitting.

I'm planning on getting it into CAD format. I'll send him a copy to check, and approve.

Do you have pics of the other OPEN qualifying circles in '69?  That would help figure out if Jim VanLoo flew in the '69 NATS .. which pertains to our other discussion on another thread.

CHECK OUT VAN LOO flying in the enhanced slides with Chris in background? Could this been in 68 instead of 69? (Guess that could indeed been 68 and not 69? Since VanLoos airplane appears to have blue checks in flight...huh? n~ n~

Yes, I did do the plans for the Zephyr. I made it a tack apart though because I thought I might want to fly to some contests. Didn't happen, so I never built the plane. I'll see if I can get a page for it on the website.

Does anybody understand the phantom lines that protrude from the elevators forward about half of the stab chord on the Scottsman? Are the elevators supposed to be that wide? This is a strange way to draw plans.

The Scottsman looks a whole lot like a late '60's RC pattern plane to me. But at least, it's not an I-Beamer.  :o Steve

In which issue of Flying Models did the "Fly Baby" appear? H^^ D>K

I'd like to know that as well.  As a driver of a full-scale Flybaby, I have a bit of motivation to build one of these jewels and paint it up like 43LN.  Might even model a semi-scale pilot for it....  naah!

Go to the site for Flying Models and do a search.  If the plans are not listed the article may not be available.  I had to get my plans from Tom Dixon as the plans were destroyed in a fire at Flying Models some time ago.  Also if lthe know the plan number which used to coincide with the issue, someone at the AMA Museum might be able to pull the issue and make a copy of the article for you.

HI Dave,

I think I have that magazine out now.  I am going through all of mine (been going about a week off and on) and labeling the ones with stunt planes in them, putting them in order.

PM me you mailing address and I will send you a copy of the article.  I am slow at times, but ask the guys, I do eventually get them out! LOL!!  I have almost all of Jack's building articles on the I-Beamers, as well as most plans, including the "Stuntliner" that John Davis finished high at the '64 NATS with (slightly different from published)..

Just checked, starts on pg. 30 November 1978 Flying Models.  I will either get out to Staples tonight or tomorrow to copy (got a couple sets of plans to copy! LOL!!)

Hello Don--good to hear from you !  Thank you much !   I have all of the other articles and the plans have been blown up.  I just finished Charles Mackey's  LARK !  Go flying lines and check out favorite planes.  I am very proud of the plane.  I have been flying with 4 other fellows for couple of years now--never in my life I thought I would
have fellow U/C to fly with.  My "pattern' is still a bit rough, but coming along.  The Lark flew off the drawing board.
I came home--took Tom Dixon Fox out-- flushed it out and oiled it and hung it up.  Its not going up until an "official"! I have the Ted Fancher's stretched Thunderbird ready for paint as well as the Road Runner.   I have the "comet" 88  -- 84" framed up. Also have .25 size of Jim Walkers  '744' -- it will be at the Regionals as a memorial for Frank Macy.  Anyway, thank you so much for article.  The way "Jack" writes is very interesting !!
