Title: Cobra refinish done ... I guess
Post by: Randy Powell on January 21, 2008, 06:00:17 PM
OK, it's as done as it's going to get. Below is a picture of the original finish and a couple of the new finish. Original all up weight was a beefy 50oz. The new weight isn't as light as I'd hoped, coming in at 47oz. But it's something, I guess. It actually looks pretty good in the pictures. A great 10 foot finish. Man, I will never finish another plane when the temps are low and the humidity is so high.

Randy,
I like it alot! I liked the yellow, but I have to confess that other than my affection for yellow, this new scheme really kicks! classy and sassy and good that you did save a little weight there anyway.

Yeah Yeah YEAH!!! Way to go Randy!  I know you perservered through a lot of paint issues - but to do all that and SAVE 3 oz is BIG time good news.  The Cobra at 47 oz should kick some serious tail - especially with the revised controls.

OK enough of that, GET BUSY on the Super Sonic!

Dennsi,

The Supersonic is going to have to wait for a bit. I promised myself that I would finish my downdraft sanding bench and some other odds and ends before I started the next project.

Thanks, Crist. Trust me, there are multitude of sins hidden in there. I'm putting off beginning the finish on my new PA plane due to the problems I had with the Cobra. Most are due to the very high humidity we've had. But I did learn a lot.

Trust me, Donnie, it's far from perfect. But it should be serviceable. If it ever really dries out.

Bill,

Yours might not be classic legal, but I like it. I like it a lot.

One thing that doesn't show up in the pictures is that the paint is heavily (probably too heavily) pearlized. Makes for an interesting looking plane. Shame the quality of the finish isn't better than it is.

If that was today, he's dressed too lightly. It's a whoping 27F out there not counting the high relative humidity. I wore 2 sweaters and a coat when I was out.

Randy, looks great!  I'm leaving Feb. 29.  Are you going to fly it before then?  I'll have to get mine in the air too, if I ever get done scribbling on it.  Ink lines are killing me!

Mike,

Great. Just let me know when you want me to deliver it. Since it's a refinish, I'm not so concerned with initial flights. It will take some re-trim when I get down to Tucson anyway and it was fairly close before I started the refinish. If I get some weather before you leave, I'll try to put up a couple of flights just to make sure nothing weird has happened if I can.

When I finished this plane originally, I was gluing the control surfaces on in the condo in Tucson. I shot clear on Thursday and was on the road Friday evening. Not a lot of fun.

Keep at that inking. While a supreme pain in the backside, you appreciate it later.

Randy,

Yep, I plan to be there. Luckily, Mike is transporting the beast so I get to fly to Tucson. Not sure I could come if I had to drive.

Thanks, again, Mike!
