Classic pattern - which clover?
« on: September 19, 2021, 02:59:13 PM »
With the new clover entry for PA, will classic and P30 use the new or old clover?

I could make an argument for either but my preferences is to use the same rulebook for all.

The PAMPA rules for Classic stunt state:  "All Pertinent AMA regulations ... and Control Line Aerobatics Rules shall be applicable ...."  On January 1, 2022, the AMA Control Line Aerobatics rule book will have the nine changes the Control Line Aerobatics Contest Board passed during this rules change cycle.  This will include the redefined four leaf clover.  So, the the pattern for the PAMPA Classic event, as well as the PAMPA Nostalgia 30 event, will be as defined in the January 2022 rule book.

There is no argument.

So, the pattern for Classic will no longer be true to that of the Classic timeframe?

If it is really wanted to follow the rules that were in effect in 1970, this is what we would have:

-  appearance points based on realism, originality, workmanship and finish (10 points each)

-  4-leaf clover that starts at 45o with somehow getting 45o loops to fit the hemisphere that the old rules required which could not be done.  The 4-leaf clover was made even worse when the starting point was changed in the mid 70's to start at 38o with 38o loops

-  no electrics since line diameter requirements for electrics were not established  (There were not any suitable electric systems available at that time anyway.)

-  line sizes based on displacement - two categories: up to .40 displacement and .40 to .65 displacement, the pull test was 10G's

-  .65 max displacement

-  hand start only

-  official flight begins when hand signal is given after the model is airborne

I think the framers for the Classic rules made the correct choice by stating in the very beginning of the PAMPA Classic rules that "All pertinent AMA regulations ... shall be applicable...."  To me, "pertinent AMA regulations" clearly means current rules, not something from more than 50 years ago.
