Bob Gialdini's Rayette
« on: November 23, 2006, 05:29:53 PM »
So far my Rayette, at 600 square inches weighs 35.4 ounces as shown with no wheels.  Plans are available at the AMA digital plans site.
I will use Bob's Eclipse paint job as an example and will have decals by Bill Calkins.

Check out the February, March and April issues of Flying Models.  I wrote a couple of columns on the Dick Mathis Excalibur last year and did the same for Bob Gialdini's Rayette, Eclipse and Sting Ray.

That should be interesting. For some reason, I thought this plane had flaps. hmmm.

Very nice.

Yep,
No flaps. I think this may be Allen's "secret weapon" airplane for use in the P-40 event this year (10 point bonus for no flaps).
Allen, its LOOKING GOOD  #^ !!!

The article states that Bob was designing a model for up and coming stunt flyers that would fly well without flaps.  They show fixed flaps on the plans but have no connections for make them work.  I desire to build this to fly P-40, Profile, Classic and Expert with one model.  The Excalibur went well, but needed to be at home with a new young flyer so it has left my stables.  The Rayette will fill that void.

Wing construction a little different, but holds to original outlines.  I desired removeable wing gear for painting and traveling needs.

The nose is painted and the lines need to be cleaned up.  The boomerang V-stripes are now taped off and I hope to get those green tonight.  Bill Calkins' decals are ready to apply.

Color choice was a Bob Gialdini type thing.  I think he is color blind and he paint schemes were very straight forward especially using the jet styled theme.  I am thinking of going non Gialdini on the bottom with "Thunderbird" type red and blue wingtips as seen only from the bottom.  Both jet styled themes but opposite in color and stripe direction.

Sounds like you will definitely be under 40 oz.  With that engine and weight, it should be "killer"!

Allan,

What year did Bob have the "Sting Ray" at VSC? The last time I saw him at VSC was about 5 years ago, and he said that he wasn't flying anymore.

I have always liked that airplane, and I flew against it at Alton, Ill, 1965

I believe my picture of Bob and the Sting Ray came from Charlie Reeves and five years ago sounds about right.

A bit of Thunderbird trim on the bottom of  the Rayette in keeping with the theme of the jet style model.

Bob's canopy had a slight colored green tint with a green anti glare panel surrounding it.

My Rayette is ready to fly, but the weather is not cooperating.  The final weight is 44.5 ounces with 600 square inches.

You know it's a spiffy plane when it's put out there with a paint scheme on the simpler side. Workmanship shines through, speaks for itself. Lovely, subtle.

The Rayette flys as good as the TEOSAWKI, another non-flapped stunt model, but surely is a lot prettier.  Non-flapped models always suffer some in the hourglass, but I enjoy this model almost as much as the Trianic.  It is eligible to fly P-40 with bonus points due to no flaps, Profile Stunt, Classic and Expert or Open.  This has been a really neat project.

The next outcome to this project is that I will be picking up Bob Gialdini's Eclipse and Bob, Dale Barry, Watt Moore and I will work on publishing this model in Flying Models also.  I am further excited about another future project.
