New Classic model started
« on: May 18, 2008, 03:53:26 PM »
This build will be agonizingly slow due to the fact that Summer has arrived in CA, and I'm repairing A/C equipment sunup to sundown. But still, I'll plug along on it and have it at VSC next year.
Keeping with Randy's game of "guess what I'm building", here's a few hints at what it is. My guess is that nobody here will have the slightest clue at what this model could be.

1. The model shares it's name with a famous mens' magazine started by Hugh Heffner
2. It's currently kitted by Windancer models
3. It's a beamer

I know that's not much to go on, but just try to figure it out. ;)

Dennis,

I looked more like a 4th grader this afternoon after my paint mishap. Hopefully, I'm fully recovered (though my shop walls heard some language that I hadn't used in years).  As my father would say, it was a character building session.

Genius includes - uh - command of the language.  I'm sure your shop walls heard only words of "empassioned" intelligence being used in complete and accurate sentence structure!   n1 b1  LL~  LL~

Back to Clint, you suppose he's going to have build the new bird while wearing silk pajamas and a velvet smoking jacket?  Oh yeah while smoking a pipe?  ???

Maybe he'll subscribe to the magazine for "research" purposes; you know only read the articles...?   b1  #^  n~  LL~

With "building assistants" Clint will have to move the workshop to the Hot Tub  8) (all left coasters have hot tubs, right???  ??? ) Under those circumstances Clint may not have the model finished in time for VSC.  ~>

Dennis, as it so happens the hot tub is on the other side of the shop wall. Convenient, huh?

Randy, no particular scheme yet. But I'm seeing some dark greens and black in it. But that may change several times before I get that far.

How about Pearl Black with a big Playboy Bunny logo on the wing. You could do it in color shift pearl; maybe red to gold.   ;D

Clint,

The easiest way (and lightest) is to spray a based color (green, gold (that's cool) or silver) and get something like House of Kolor candy intensifier. You mix it in with clear dope and shoot that over the base. I you use gold as a base, you'll get gold overtones. Silver is brighter. A light green or white gives a screaming green pearl (and I mean loud). When I did the Novi, I used white then shot green candy. Looked like a lime popcicle. then I shot some more with gold pearl mixed in and it toned down. Best would be to use silver or gold as a base.

So if I wanted a pearl green paint job, I should spray silver, then clear with the intensifier, then my green? HB~>

Clint,

Depends on the effect you want. For a green pearl, it would be easy (versus a candy green that I was talking about before) I'm no expert. Probably ought to get someone like Walt Prey on here to explain all the tricks. But I can say that I would want to use a method that puts the least amount of paint on possible. I would shoot a base color. Gold or green or silver. If green, you would probably want to use a light or mint green. Something like that. Then mix clear dop with something like House of Kolor's dry green pearl. They make a couple of kinds. I like the organic green pearl, but get what you like. Anyway, mix it in the clear dope and shoot that over the base. That way you only get two coats of paint. As I say, if gold, you get some pretty cool gold overtones. If silver, it will be a bright pearl (also cool). With green, it will mostly add pearl and tone the color down. It all depends on the effect you're looking for.

I'd probably get some sliver, gold and green and shoot a test panel (old dope cans are good from this). Shoot each one with a bit of each base color then mix up a bit of the pearl and shoot over and see what you get. Then you can decide which you like the best.

HI Clint,

Listen to Randy, he's on the mark.  A *Candy* paint is translucent.  It will NOT cover on its own (unless you have several gallons to put on a Nobler).  What ever you use for a base color will affect the color you get.

Pearls are really fun to work with. a *clear pearl* (old term, actually looks like mother of pearl, sorta) will give a silvery effect to what ever color you already have.  More coats, more silvery.  A pearl that *matches* the color you are using is hard to get *much* effect on something as small as our stunt planes.  It kinda tones things down like Randy said.

Remember, candys and pearls were developed for custom car painting.  A *canvas* much larger than out stunt planes.  On a full size '66 Chevelle SS, a Pearl Gold powder in clear, over Candy gold, over a gold base is really a site to see, especially when the bottom of the car is pearl black..  Using lacquer and rubbing it all out, it looks a mile deep and has all kinds of effects in the sunlight.  Almost like the prismatic paints!

Bill makes a good point. Light pearls (alabaster, silver, etc) in dark paint (dark green, black, dark blue) will have a huge effect. When you put pearls of the same color (green in green), the effect is to make it sort of silvery, but it's a muted effect. Putting green pearls in say, gold, is an interesting effect as is the reverse.

Point is, there are all kinds of things you can do to get all kinds of effects. Just sort of depends on what you're going for. The Cobra I refinished for VSC this year had white, red, blue and yellow/gold trim. I shot some clear with alabaster pearl in it over the top. Just one medium coat. The effect was to turn the whole plane sort of silvery white in the sun. When you looked at it one way, the colors really stood out. Another way and it sort of looked silvery white. It was an interesting effect.

I have some PPG Prismatic Pearl powder that I have yet to try out.  For as while there I had an ex student running the paint shop.  He gave me *samples* of all kinds of things.

I did use some Duplicolor Flip Flop paint (red to gold) for trim on one plane.  It would have had a MUCH better effect if I had shot the WHOLE PLANE in it!  (which is something I AM going to do very soon!!! LOL!!)  Actually, since i have been watching Cousin Randy doing all these wild things with paint, I have really been planning on using all three of the Duplicolor Flip Flops on a plane.  Besides the red/gold, they have a blue, and a green, IIRC.
