Title: Ares First Flight
Post by: Skip Chernoff on April 25, 2017, 07:07:50 PM
Although my new Ares was still painted with just  the white base color Rustoleum High Gloss Enamel on the fuse and tail feathers...Monokote on the wings....I had to test fly her. I was pleasantly surprised. She weighs 48 ounces, but flies great with an La 40,4.5 oz tank. 6.5mm venturi. I flew her with an 11x5 prop. I used 61x.015 lines eyelet to eyelet. 4" handle spacing. She was eager to turn a nice corner, inverted flight was effortless. I'll post pics when she's fully finished and all dolled up. I just love the style of the Ares......PhillySkip

Doc I've got quite a few of the "Classic" planes. Pretty soon I'm going to have to take them all to the field to see which one is going with me to Brodaks this year. I've got an Ares,Thunderbird 1,Nobler,Skylark,and very cool Pollywog Chief. I love this stuff!

Gotta love the Ares.  I had several as a teen.  Flew one in senior at the 73' Nats.  I want to build many of these 'Detroiters' but I'm afraid they wouldn't survive for long on our knotty grass field with the low set and wheel pants.  Maybe we'll lay a paved takeoff strip someday.  I have a Ballerina under way.  Good luck with yours!

Thanks Jeff .  While at Brodaks Mike Palko and Danny suggested that I take out all of that right rudder. We busted out the Exacto blades and Zona saw and cut into her to reposition the rudder. In no time at all the rudder was straight ahead. I was going to test fly it at Brodaks but ran out of time. At home now I'm filling and refinishing the rudder. Gotta love an Ares.

Today I went flying with Joe Adamusko, we worked on trimming my new Strega. I've got a long way to go...
