Sterling FLYING FOOL
« on: February 23, 2014, 07:37:24 PM »
I completed the Flying Fool a week or two ago, and put a picture on another post. Someone suggested that I make a new post for this one, with pictures: so, here goes.

The kit was typical Sterling quality, but useable, other than the fuselage top sheeting, which was too hard to make the curve. I've heard stories of them shedding the upper wing in flight, and that they stunt poorly. I made a new, fatter airfoil for both wings, and reinforced the interplane struts and ribs, where they attach. The Flying Fool is powered with a Fox .35, which has been massaged by Lew Woolard. Lew lives nearby, and we fly together. Fantastic engine!

The plane is covered in Ultracote and Monokote on the fuselage and tail; the wings are ParkLite. Purple color is from a spray can.

The Flying Fool does okay in the air, but it won't be my #1 stunt ship, but it does look neat.
I will build it. It's gonna be really difficult to find me with an ARF. I know every bit of my airplane!

Yep, I have flown this one. It does okay, but won't be my #1 stunt ship.

I love the color scheme.   Yes, the flying fool will not challenge a Nobler or Oriental for flying quality, but for fun flying and attention they do the job.  I have in the back of my mind to build another one.  Mine was Veco .35 powered and was box stock.  Never a problem with the wing attachment.   I see you are close enough we might get together sometime.   Our new circle is in Lenexa KS or there a bouts.  Missed the Wichita contest this year.

I finished building this one on Christmas eve 2013.  :D   It got a pretty good looking Fox 35 for power that I bought off EBay but haven't fired it up as yet.    While I would like to fly it   :-\  but on the other hand, I'd also like to sell it so I could fund some other building projects.   ???

I still have my Flying Fool from about 1965.  It has been stripped, glue joints went over, and repainted Aerogloss Light Metallic Green.  It has been sitting ever since then!  Will have to go over it again before I try to fly it again.

It was always a FUN model to fly!
