ARGO 2, Almost ready for paint.
« on: June 26, 2016, 06:12:00 AM »
Started the finishing on the ARGO II and finally got a good day in FL to put a light coat of primer on the model.

I'll sand all of this first coat with 400. "CORRECTION." I use 320 not 400.

I already see a few areas that will need attention before the next coat. No big deal there, just time and sanding.

CB

Here's a link to more information on the finish of the ARGO 2.

Might get a second coat of primer on the ARGO II tomorrow.

Hi Charles.  Whats the dark grey?  Is that a spot putty?

Hey! Hey! Glenn,

I just look at the pictures also, but I mention "spot putty" in the above text. Mine isn't a two part mix, straight out of the tube. Dries as fast as you apply it.

I had an issue on a few of the open bays.   LL~

I applied some spot putty on the open bays and sanded away with 400, "CORRECTION." I use 320 not 400,
until the putty was feathered and smooth. I always sand the open bays. 400 then a quickie 600 before paint.

So far all the putty has beed sanded with 400. "CORRECTION." I use 320 not 400.
Another coat of primer is next.

Glenn, thanks for the reply.

I did get that second coat of white on the ARGO II.

I'll sand the entire model with 320. Already I see a few more imperfections.

Hi Charles, always a pleasure to watch you work!  A favour?  Could you do a little bit on how you make and apply the masks and or graphics/decals?  I have always heard about them, but have never seen them used before and have always been curious. H^^

Glenn,

You're too kind. I think I have already done a few Threads on the use of graphics and masks. This one came to mind and was easy to find.

http://stunthanger.com/smf/paint-and-finishing/a-graphics-build-using-vinyl-materials!/

The others would probably be with the Skyfall 007 and the Mig-3 as the topic. Could be a few years back?

You could do a search. Gotta remember, I make vinyl graphics and I would use vinyl lettering or graphics first before I would do a mask. However, the Flite Streak Skyfall 007 has a combination of both.

With Roberts efforts, I'm guessing most photos are already back in place.

BTW. There are many in the Forum who have cutters and make their own masks. I've also made masks for many modelers, not sure if they post photos?

Thanks for the reply.

Charles

Doesn't look like the link is taking you to the right Thread? If interested, page 3, the Thread is at the top.

This is the only piece of sand paper and block that I used on the ARGO II.

I made the sanding block with soft balsa. The paper is 320.

Glenn,

It's a small model and 320 goes a long way.

Oh! No wet sanding at all.

Time to start thinking about color.

Thanks for the reply.

Well, I have some landing gear soldering issues to accomplish, but after that, it's time for me to really get on track and on target with the painting and finishing of the ARGO 2, Casino Royale 007.

Flying season will be upon us before you know it and I really have my work cut out for me if I want my models to fly.

I have the Stuka Tank Buster to finish and clear also and I'll have four engines to brake in, maybe even five.

Sooooooooo, I asked wifey poo, no I don't call my wife wifey poo, I actually call her Kelly even though her name is Paula.

Kelly sat with me for a bit and with the help of Photoshop here's what she came up with for a color palette for the ARGO 2. Remember, she picked the colors for the ARGO, and I mentioned that.

Now I have to decide where the colors are going?

She'll help me with placement also but I have to put one draft together first, that would be the line art for the layout.

What a gal!

I had to get the landing gear soldered for the attachment points for the foax gear door covers.

16 pieces total. Grrrrrrrr. Last task before paint. Well, I do have to design a scheme.

I drew the ARGO 2, two views of it in my CAD program, Computer Added Drawing, so I can play with schemes and color placement.

Just a "click" and you can change a color. Great asset.

 Thanks for the reply.

The ARGO 2 just got a new set of clothes.

I stripped off the silkspan, if that old stuff was silkspan, and replaced it with silk.

Four coats of thinned dope and it looks like it could use a bit more.

I'll get photos when I'm no longer mad at the model.  HB~>

As I said, I removed all the old silkspan covering and re-covered the wings with silk.

Removing the old covering was not enjoyable to say the least. I just took my time.

I applied the new silk covering totally dry using only thin CA. It went quick!

I did this before on the Gee Bee Z fuselage and tail feathers so I kinda knew what to expect.

I'll probably cover the Gee Bee R-3 wings the same way.

The task was a bit of a stumbling block but it had to be re-covered.

You'll never be able to tell the covering was redone.

Looks good with a few coats of clear dope.

The Argo 2 needed a bit more primer in places. Canopy area, LE and a bit on the rudder.

84 degrees in the spray booth, so the overspray dried immediately and did get a bit pebbly.

No big deal, just a bit of extra work knocking it down. 400 in the rough areas and 600 everywhere else.

ARGO 2 clamped to a picnic table at the tennis courts. My outdoor spray booth.

Painted the anti glare area in front of the canopy AND painted the canopy along with it. Black.

Highlighted the canopy with Golden metallic silver shot with an airbrush. heavy in areas and dusted in others. Clear varnish over the silver for protection. Black with silver accents on the canopy, my signature.

Blue would not have worked, seeing the model is painted with neutral colors. This will allow for many color combinations with the graphics and one final color.

Not sure what that color will be yet.

Traian,

I know you like these elliptical wings, as I do. A bit more taxing to build but they could have an advantage in performance? Note my question mark.  LL~

Elliptical wings model are around and are great to look at.

BTW. The T-Bird wing on this model was handed to me covered. I striped it down and did a few fixes on it as best I could. It still isn't perfect.

From 200 feet away it looks great!

Rain and high humidity today but WTH, I though I'd take my chances and give it a shot.

My buddy, a purple Krylon aerosol can left over from the 007 Skyfall.

Blushing? I don't know yet. I shot it twice. Once with the can of paint then with my camera.  LL~

I haven't look back. I'll see how it looks tomorrow when I sand the new color.

Someone recently said that three different colors were all that was needed or necessary for a nicely painted model.

I thought about this.

I have five different painted colors on the ARGO 2 and will have four different colors of vinyl graphics applied when finished.

That's 8 different colors total.

The international flag graphics, which BTW, are 100% correct. Colors there are unlimited.

Looking good Charles

I'm a sucker for elliptical wings myself. Fancy building one that was very popular over here after Tony E. won the Nats repeatedly with it called the Freebird. Looks a bit like a short moment T Bird and is very lightly built. Powered originally by a 35 diesel the model gradually grew in size and weight and eventually Tony used a 40 ball-raced diesel. Good looking model that suits our windy comp days.  :D I've also got the plan of the original and a 35 PAW which has had an hours careful running in on the bench so I'm good to go . . .

Anyway meant to say that I've used silk over mylar on a few models which uses less dope and helps stop the dope running through the open weave of lightweight silk. Got some lovely bright orange which I'll probably use on a Rutteress when I've finished the current jobs.

Keep up the good work
Paul

Paul,

Thanks for the reply.

I'd be interested in seeing what your "Freebird" looks like? Can you Post photos?

Sounds like a nice looking model and a proven performer.

Hi Charles

Hopefully Ray Lloyd won't mind me nabbing his photo from the Barton site to give you an idea of it's looks. This one has an electric rather than IC motor so the nose looks longer and differently shaped to the plan version I have.
The thread incidentally is here - http://controlline.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?printertopic=1&t=10090&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&vote=viewresult

Paul,

Interesting model and a great Thread of photos. Does resemble the T-Bird and I love wings shaped like this.
