About 11 pages back in the carrier section, I have a build thread called "Dumas Crusader for nostalgia profile". I used an inverted short Brodak bellcrank, but as you can see I mounted the controls externally.
I find this to be easier to build, and infinitely easier to adjust or service. One thing to be aware of is that when it comes to 3-line handles and bellcranks, there is "Brodak J Roberts", and "Sturdi-Built J Roberts", and they are not the same. If a handle says "Sturdi-Built" on it, it only works properly with the Sturdi-Built bellcranks. Components that are made by Brodak, L&R, and G-S are all the same and will work together. The difference is in the amount of travel in the throttle control. The Sturdi-Built components have less travel than the others. This could easily be another discussion, so just trust me on this.
As Paul mentioned, you could make your life a lot easier and use a simple 2.4 ghz RC car radio system to operate the throttle. Simply hold the transmitter in your other hand while you fly with the customary 2 line control system. This also means you could leave the transmitter at home and fly without throttle if you desired.
Going back to the original question, upright bellcranks are designed to mount on top of the bellcrank platform, and inverted bellcranks mount below the platform. If you try to use the bellcrank the "wrong" way, the throttle control faces the rear of the airplane instead of the front.
I hope this helps more than confuses!
