What's a good RPM for the TT 36?
« on: September 26, 2012, 08:06:10 PM »
Didn't want to intrude into the HP thread, but would like to know what RPM to expect from a stock TT 36 and APC 9x6 prop.  How about a modified TT 36?  Who can do the mod work?

Lots of dumb questions; that's the only kind I know............

Thanks,
Jim

That's OK Jim, we have lots of dumb answers. Got out my write it down or you will forget it book and it says with an APC 9/6 it turns 17,800 with the stock TT carb and 18,300 with a Perry 1301 while running on the ground with 10% fuel. These rpms sound allfully optimistic to me now but that is what I wrote down? I know it was with my first TT engine and it has always been my strongest TT36. Hope others will chime in here with there results.  Eric

If that is on open exhaust, that's REALLY good!

Your right Bill. This was with my first TT36 bought just after they came on the market. I've bought 4 more over the last couple of years and none of them has performed as well as that first one. I guess I should have reported on my later ones but they were always so disappointing after that first one that I never wrote down any of the times. I'm thinking they were around 1k lower but even at that for the money you cant complain to much.
Jim Schneider from the Bay area has one that was reworked by Gardner (cant remember his first name) who was known for his racing K&B hop ups. I've seen Jim turn in the mid 18s on occasion so I had Gardner work on one of mine but it turned out to be very disappointing. I think these engines get better as they get run in and seem easy to set up as long as you don't use the carb that comes with them.
Which OS engine are you running right now, I know you had a better HS time than I had last time we flew together?  Eric

Vic Garner is who you are talking about. Unfortunately, Vic is no longer with us. My gray Zero is using a Wiley 36. Unfortunately, Willy Wiley is no longer with us either.  My best mass produced engine right now is the OS35AX. With a good setting it will go about 21 flat on 10%. I haven't tried more nitro, or any props other than the APC 9x6, so there may be more to be had. A while back, I had a Webra 36 that would go about 20 flat on 10% (with the stock carb, too). When I was away from the hobby, I sold that engine. Kinda wish I had it back now... :-\

My engine choices are the TT 36 or a Webra 32, both new.  Any experience with the Webra 32?

I started out in carrier with a Webra 32. I'm thinking this was around 1992 and I chose that engine because it was popular in carrier and easy to use. I even liked the carb because it didn't have a throttle stop and after I landed I could shut the engine off. I seemed to be the only guy around that liked the feature and now I cant believe I got away with it. I think the TT36 is just a little stronger. I don't know if there mounting bolt placement is the same, would be nice to compare them.  Eric

I'm working on a Brodak Guardian and plan to use one of these engines on it.  Don't really expect to fly in contests with it--just for fun, but who knows what may happen.

I understand that exhaust pressure isn't allowed; is there any reason to use the muffler?

I have found they run better at idle with mufflers, probably due to increased back pressure. I'm also not real fond the decibels one gets with a high rpm open exhaust and not overly concerned about max RPM.  FWIW: I have used both the Webra 32 an TT 36. TT is stronger but I really like running the Webra, just a solid, well-made, European engine. Don't like the no-idle stop on the carb although the carb itself works well. 8)

Both the webra and TT36 work well for carrier. Both are seen often at Brodak's. The TT36 stock carb will not work unless used with muffler pressure. It has a collector ring setup attached to the fuel nipple and needs a boost. I replace the stock carb with an os 4D, an exact fit. The webra carb works ok on suction. I currently have the tt36 with a tuned pipe. It seems to be a couple of seconds faster than open face TT36's. A little tricky for carrier, but does work with a little extra tuning effort .

I was getting my NW Sport 40 ready to go for this weekends Hi-Johnson contest and ran across some more RPM figures for the Thunder Tiger 36. Says here that this TT36 with a stock TT carb on 10% fuel with muffler pressure running a APC 9/6 turned 16,300 with the muffler and 17,000 without the muffler. That sounds about right although I'm wondering how I got it to run without the muffler (well it was top RPM).  Eric
