Phillip Browne's "Wildcat"

I thought I would pass on this picture sent to me by Phillip Browne.  It is one of my 2011 "Wildcat" kits (ARC kinda). Phillip used an Enya .35 #5224 with a square intake and an obvious long exhaust extension.  The tank is a uniflo Hayes 4oz. and the unusual wheels are from an ebey store  <bigboy9343>  Phillip noted the wheels come in various colors.

Looks good however you might advise him to go with a tongue muffler if he plans any arrested landings. That  header muffler looks as if it would not allow much clearance in the event of a hard deck landing.  8)

Amen Pete, one landing other then perfect say good bye to header pipe. Some come in hot and heavy. Each time you miss the deck you lose points. Pipe looks cool but will break very soon if flown in a Carrier event. How do I know?  As a event timer you are right close to the deck from start to finish. Buy alot of extra props another thing that gets broken on landing very easy.

"Fuel of standard formula shall be supplied by the contest organizers. .....................
 The fuel shall contain 10% nitromethane, 20% lubricant, and 70% methanol by volume.
  If the contestant uses this fuel, the length of the passage through which the exhaust
   exits the engine is not restricted."

This applies to the "rulebook" events - if someone is flying a 'local' event then it would
be up to the organizers.

BUT ... the muffler pressure (as pictured) is not legal in 'rulebook' events.

I have been allowing muffler pressure in Sportsman and 15 locally for 20 years and at Brodaks for the last 5 or 6 years. At the NCS meeting in Muncie this year I proposed we add it to the AMA profile rules.  Dick Perry took an action to look in to a rules proposal for the next cycle. Some people worry about increasing performance over suction. I have never seen any evidence of that. 
At Brodaks the question of 10% fuel is one of Honor. You can use your own but we ask that it be 10%.

Allowing muffler pressure is a long overdue change IMHO. I always thought the original intent was to outlaw crankcase pressure but that was never specified. I have found that later model .36 engines are designed to run on muffler pressure so this will make the event easier to get started in. Now, if you all would only come up with a non-prop hanging profile class.  S?P

Hi Joe,

It looks great!  Mine has been patiently waiting on me to get to it.  There's nothing out of the ordinary, building wise, from looking over the kit so I recommend something like this for anyone who wants to give Carrier a shot.  I am just waiting with anticipation to get mine going! ;D


I have been itching for close to 50 years to give three line a shot, just got extremely caught up in the "Stunt Wars"! LL~ LL~

I searched AMA event #321, Navy Carrier, Profile. I can't find a single rule that says you have to hang! S?P

I used muffler pressure in my profile at Brodak's and elsewhere this year. I find it really helps a consistant engine run.  I also use 10% all the time in almost all my planes including NW Sport .40 Profile even though the current NW rules state there is no restriction on fuel usage, a ruling I hope to help change this coming year.

No one thought that they would see me hanging an airplane because I so dislike its nonprototypical look. My prototype roundtail Guardian. Modified Brodak kit with Irvine .36 ABC R/C that has a OS 4BK carb on suction. I am getting dangerous.

That is why I started flying carrier back in the 60's.   Missed a few years when I started trying to compete in F2C.  Carrier is fun and I hope to do more of it as well as playing with the other events. H^^

Yes the pipe is too low and I will not fly with it.    Just mounted it for engine tests....my first Enya.  What tung muffler would you suggest?....And also any alternate low drag wheel suggestions.    This is my first carrier plane and I hope to fly it soon.....Thanks
