My Skyray
« on: October 29, 2009, 05:44:32 PM »
If the picture loads you will see I have not been blowing wind.  It is my Skyray for carrier.  Power is a Webra .32 that I have had good results with in the past.  That is when I can get people to leave the needle alone.  Still have to do the graphics and fuel tank.  The pads are in place for the hook, which will not be put on until I see how it flies.  Then it may only go on for competition.  Having fun,  DOC Holliday

LQQkin good Doc,  Maybe we can make it to the Fun Carrier thing they are planning over in Missouri.  As you have probably already read, there are several of us building carrier plane here in Tulsa area.

Hi Doc,

How does the Webra run without muffler pressure?  What prop/fuel/plug are you using?

I am trying to decide between a Webra 32 and a TT 36 for my Brodak Guardian............

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

My first carrier plane was a Brodak (Calkins) Guardian with a Webra 32. I think I ran an APC 9X6 on 20% fuel with Fox plugs. Never could get it to go much faster than about a 24 sec high speed. I thought it flew really well and the Webra ran very nicely. That was about 9 years ago and currently there is a fellow at the field where I fly using a TT36. It also seems to run very strong. He has it on an old profile Hellcat and has gotten down under 21 seconds with it which is not too shabby. So even though I have experience with the Webra I might lean towards the TT36 just because of the good results the guy here has had.  The only problem he has had is keeping the needle in place. It seems like he has to open it a lot to get it to run its best and then it is hanging on by just a few threads. He put a piece of tubing over it to keep it from backing out.

Just my observations.

Before I put my TT36 on pressure, I had to run the needle almost all the way out.  Added pressure and it went back in to where mfg. recommended.  I realize in profile no pressure is allowed, but thats my find.

One thing to do in this case would be to open up the seat in the spray bar. That would require you to screw in the needle more. Need to find a drill bit just slightly larger than the diameter of the seat (small hole that the needle fits through).

The power comes from the big venturi (or throttle opening), but that leads to a poor fuel draw, which leads to having to open the needle so far out.

I run the muffler with out pressure as it is not allowed in profile.  Now the engine that could not be run with out pressure, I would like to see the needle.  I had a K&B that would not lean out when the needle valve was screwed in all the way.  Mr. Meriwether took a small hammer and put the needle over a hole on the bench.  He proceeded to drive the needle in a little bit in the needle housing.  I literally wore that engine out flying it.  Had a Merco that had to drive the needle out on the housing.  The old timers will remember the two part needle valves.  Havew fun,  DOC Holliday
