Cool video. It will be hard to complain that hanging is not realistic!
-
"hanging is not realistic..." ???
John, I know you're kidding---right?
-
not if you are flying a F-35B
-
But in a horizontal pitch attitude, not vertical.....
Do I correctly remember one of the Lockheed or Convair pogo turboprops being tried out for carrier use?

Seen that video via an E-mail I received. Like I asked then, wait til some stormy night and see how it goes.
Now my comments on hanging. If it doesn't go backwards it is not hanging. A Bi-Slob hangs once in a while during flight as it is vertical at that point. By the way, at one of the last air shows I attended and Navy pilot made a pass down the runway with gear down, flaps down and well past 30 degrees. I wondered how he kept control as it was moving so slow.
-
Doc,
It wouldn't take a stormy night.......lots of possibilities for a fatal event. NO possibility of ejection in a landing situation either. Not surprized that the pogos didn't make the cut .........but they are cool.

Jim,
Ted kraver built and flew a Pogo at the NATS several years ago. It had electric throttle, he got it off the deck vertically but as I recall had some throttle problems while flying due to a loose connection. It would be a true 'hanger'
-
Pretty odd to see an airplane take off the deck with full down elevator...
Noticed they still use the same tiedown chains we were using in the 60's, guess it's hard to improve on something that works so well. Been known to tow a dead car or two with one..
-
John,
I have long wanted to build a pogo but never had the guts to do it. Any pics of Ted's?
-
Jim,
I don't but I am sure Ted does. he is currently the NSC newsletter editor, here is his email; ted@kraver.cc

Notice there are NO cross deck pendants (arresting gear) and the USS Wasp is an LHD (LHD-1), an amphibious ship, not an attack carrier. So how does this fit in our tiny bird farms with 10 arresting ropes on bags of dirt or sand??? Any one want to attempt to come up with a hover capablilty? Jet or ducted fan? Should be fun. Instead of arresting cables use a bullseye!
