There are probably a lot of the old planes that made it back to the departure site or landed without killing all the crew back in the day. With no more training than those young men got, it amazes me that they got there and back. Go to You Tube and watch some of the videos of the returning planes trying to land on the carrier and on land.

Hopefully most made it back home. Maybe not in one piece. Seeing videos of the deck crew pulling pilot out of cockpit all covered with blood was not good to see, but hopefully still alive. Land crashes the same bodies being pulled from the wrecks all mangled up. I hope most made it too old age, but there were so many young men lost in the wars because of a few idiots that thought they could rule the world. I hope this is not too political.

They actually had a lot of training.. more than we give USAF pilots today.. depending on how you want to quantify it.. Today we use a lot more simulators. In WW2 you had three phase training, primary basic and advanced.. then you went to training on whatever track you were assigned ie bomber, transport or fighter.. When I graduated in 1982 from USAF UPT I had about 150 hours between the T-37 and T-38 WW2 training track was somewhere between 140 and 160 hours of flying..

I'm betting that's where the missing wing section flipped up and over, smacking the fuse after separation.

I thought I remembered the damage was caused by a mid-air collision with another Avenger. Did a reverse Google image search to refresh my memory.

The short version is that one Avenger in the flight got hit by AA, and as it went out of control it collided with the pictured Avenger, causing the damage. The pilot ordered the crew to bail out, then recovered control and flew it back to the fleet to ditch. The pilot was rescued, the crew was captured and killed by the Japanese, and the other plane never recovered, the crew didn't get out before it crashed.
