Title: Sabre & Cobra
Post by: john e. holliday on January 20, 2011, 04:42:30 PM
Well Big Country Joe you asked for it.  I have the full kit of the Cobra and partial kit of the Sabre.  Both are J. Roberts Model Mfg Co.  kit out of Baker OREGON.   If I add a carrier hook for landing on a deck is/are they legal for Nostalgia Carrier.  He does not show a carrier hook.  The two planes will be built using my construction methods.  You should not be able to tell unless you strip the covering.  Later,   H^^

I'll jump in with the easy part of the answer--

If it's got 300 sq. in. and it's a profile, it's legal for 36 profile nostalgia (or AMA).

The harder part of the question is--

Would that model qualify for the bonus points?   ???

I'll testify that I flew a hook equipped Sabre at the Sepulveda Basin around 1968 while a member of the Valley Circle Burners. Ron Duly might remember the plane, it was black with "panel lines" cut out of adhesive tape. Hey, I was a junior...it worked. A photo of it making an arrested landing was printed in the C/L column of Model Airplane News around that time. I would think that that should be enough to get it on the "Bonus List". Go for it Doc...just don't paint it with that 50 year old can of Rustoleum you have in your paint locker.  8)

My take Doc....36 Profile elligible if 300 squares.  Nostalgia?  I'll leave that decision up to others, but will say that J Roberts stuff certainly fits the time period. Neat looking designs!

There were two more kits in this series, the Swift and AM-1 profile Mauler. The swift was a conventional gear airplane and looked like a PT-19. The profile Mauler didn't make the mass market. It was the same size as the full fuselage Mauler and used the same wing and fuselage construction design as the other three kits.        Mike

WOW!, I haven't seen that picture in....well, 41 years. Great job Ty, and Thanks!  OK, NCS types, that should remove all doubt that this plane should qualify for Nostalgia carrier. Doc, go for it...wait, didn't I say that earlier?  8)

I'm sorry Pete, I wasn't there, I wasn't born yet, I don't remember, I'm too young....... well maybe not. Yes, all the J.Roberts kits are Nostalgia legal. I had a Profile Mauler back then.  Blue Aerogloss was not fuel proof. My blue Mauler ended up dirty balsa colored after several seasons.

Mybe a "dumb" question, but........... if the "Saber" is a F-86 look a like and the NAVY flew the f-86 as a "Fury" (F-4J ??), would it be "bonus eligible"?  I think I have that right.... ;D

In Nostalgia profile, there is no scale bonus, because it didn't exist in the profile carrier rules in 1975. In today's rules, the scale bonus points are based on whether the model "resembles" an appropriate carrier legal prototype. I could be all wet on this, but I don't think the F-86 is a carrier legal aircraft, so you would have to say it's a Fury to be eligible for bonus points. As for the "resemble" aspect, personally I'm just not seeing it. (But that only really matters if I'm the event director on contest day.)

All that aside, I've never seen either of these models, so I would love to see then built and flown.

Thanks for the reply, Bill.  Randy Bush asked about the "Bonus" so I figured I would follow up with my question.

In Nostalgia they do have bonus points for "period appropriate" aircraft. From the above conversations, the models would be eligible for that bonus.

Yes I am slow, mean and senile.   But, I have this much done on the Sabre and Cobra planes.   To me it looks like the only differences are the tail surfaces and wing tips.  The rest seems to be identical.  Will need to get to Kinkos to get copies made for the tracings and plans/instructions.  More later. I know it's borderline rude to bump an old thread back to life, but I think my request really belongs here.

Is there any chance an old copy of the Cobra plans and patterns are still kicking around in y'all's collections? Mark Mc'c recent RFI regarding 3-line throttle has me wanting to look at scratching one out.

I have ready access to a large-format scanner/plotter so making copies is easy for me.

Thanks in advance!

Now this old man needs help in finding the drawings I had.  If you could see my shop you would know.  Maybe in time it may come to me where I put them. ???

Thanks for reminding the old man of this.  Now the back is better and catching up on chores I may get in the shop. H^^

I guess the only difference between the Cobra and the Sabre is the vertical fin? Otherwise they look very similar. I have one or the other hanging in my garage that was a rescue. Bee trying to snag any of the Roberts kits but always seem to be a day late and a dollar short.  Gott go look these up in some old catalogs and see what the others were. If any one comes up with plans, hard copies or digital files, I'm interested in some.
  Type at you later,

Mr. Dan,
We are both searching for J Roberts stuff. I'm only interested in the Cobra. But I'll make sure to let you know if/when if I ever find anything related. The last hard kit I found the guy wanted $200. That's a bit steep just to digitize the plans and templates.

Big Bear

To get the 100 points in Nostalgia Carrier, it only needs to be "old" as in before the cutoff date.  It doesn't need to be either a carrier or navy design.  Hence,  a Ringmaster or Flite Streak is OK for the N-carrier bonus.  Up until circa 1976 there was no need for a Profile Carrier plane to resemble anything.
Here's a (kit) Flite Streak set up for Nostalgia Carrier.

Strangely, some planes like the Cobra and Sabre were designed LONG before profile carrier existed.

Say Mike, if that Sabre kit is still available at a non-stupid price, put my name on it and I'll pick it up at the NW Regionals. With any luck at all I'll bring it back in 2024 looking like a Fury, tail hook and all.  y1
