Blackburn Firebrand
« on: November 26, 2017, 08:21:32 AM »
I've been interested in this plane for some time. So I thought I would build one with an eye to using it for Paul Smith's .25 carrier, but make it large enough to be AMA legal. I may even make it switchable Glow-Electric if that turns out to be feasible. Some background on the plane is attached.

Pistons are heavy.

Motors are light.  Hence, long nose for electric, short for gas.

I would like the Westland Wyvern if I planned to dabble in scale electric.

The Wyvern's claim to fame was a mountain of test data for the Martin-Baker ejection seat due to lockup of the counter-rotating props.

Oh I like that plane for a profile carrier plane. Don't care much for the turbine powered model for anything, looks so much like IC to turbine conversion. With a profile you could give it more wing area without changing the looks all that much and come up with a pretty competitive plane in AMA Profile and .15. Wish I had seen it before I started a new Seafire carrier plane for .15 but am to far along to quit on that one for now.

Have you seen this article? This is from Aeromodeller, but it seems like there is a US design also - maybe the AMA plans list would show it.

I am familiar with the Aeromodeler article, but don't know of any other article

Yeah, I looked on the AMA plans list and didn't see anything.  I'm not sure what it is that I (kinda) remember -

I finally am getting  back to the Firebrand. I wanted a design that I could convert to either glow or electric  ( for Paul Smith's event) or AMA carrier. Glow will use RC throttle as will electric versions. I'll be able to mount .25 for Paul's event and .36 for AMA. Details of the mount system will be shown as I get it fab'd. Attached is a pic of the major parts. Although I designed a built up wing, I decided to go with a simpler and quicker wing using the rather odd looking KFm-2 airfoil. Don't laugh , it works, and is very popular in the RC foamy community.

For many, many years I have been both attracted to and repulsed by, that aircraft.  It has those beautiful, swoopy wing tips, then less than stellar, sorta half round horizontal stabiliser tips, then that god awful square vertical humongous tail!  Its like the designer just got lazy and gave up on the design.  But on the other hand, you put them all together and she looks like a fighter that won't give up on any fight.  Quite the contradictory aircraft. Sounds perfect my KFm wing. It is both ugly and effective

The Firebrand is progressing, albeit slowly. I'll try to post some pic's this weekend. It is looking like I'll be under 16oz without motor. It just seems to nice to try to make it dual glow/electric. So, electric only it will be. I have several glow ship I can use for Paul's fun carrier. I have asked him to clarify if OS 35/40 FP can be used.
