Title: Question about Carrier in Iowa
Post by: Stevers001 on August 06, 2017, 08:49:04 AM
Hi all,
New guy to the for forum here, lot's of great info! Anyway does anyone know if the Mid Iowa Control Liners are still flying carrier sport over there? I live in Council Bluffs IA and have always wanted to give carrier a try, I flew C/L quite a bit when I was younger and have gotten the urge to build something, I have the plans for a Sig Skyray a pile of balsa and a really good O.S. 25FP motor, I know it's not the fastest motor but as Mike Anderson said "build a plane, bolt on a engine and go fly, it's more fun the waiting till you have better equipment.
Thanks to all! Steve

They are still flying Carrier there. I went to their contest in June.

I've never heard of an aircraft carrier in mid-Iowa.  The closest I ever heard of was Lake Michigan near Chicago.

OK, seriously, did he say model carrier?

An FP25RC is a good reliable throttle control engine.  Another benefit is the ability to swap out for other OS 25's if the first one doesn't go.

As a first carrier project, I wouldn't bother building a plane.  I would retrofit an underperforming sport plane with 2.4 to get the hang of it.  Find a Flite Streak or a Ringmaster or some such plane and take poke at it.

You can get a whole 2.4 RC system for less money than a 3-line bellcrank, handle and lines.
3-channel car controller & receiver for $40
Servos $3 each
Four AAA battery box with batteries and built-in switch $5.
Under $50 all inclusive.
Use your existing lines & handle.

3-line systems are listing for $90.

Finally, I suggest setting up 2.4 test stand.  You can get something of a kick by revving the engine from 100 feet away where they can't see you.

This is a Cosmic Wind retrofitted to NW 40 Carrier with 2.4.  The yellow box is a 2.4 launcher that works off the steering wheel of the same controller.

We don't have carrier events here in St Louis but we do have 5 contests during the year that you might be interested in. We have 3 paved circles that are really smooth and flat without any defects. Our main circle has been repaved and the other two will be fixed and sealed this coming week.

Feb - Stunt, Perky and Fox 35 speed (spoiler alert, it's going to be cold)

April - Speed

Sept - Stunt and Scale

Oct - Old Time events

Nov - Turkey Shoot - one airplane with fast, slow, scramble and balloon bust (2nd spoiler alert, it's going to be cold again)

I would also recommend the 2.4 Ghz systems over the 3-line systems, the wireless 2.4 Ghz systems are working out great. I have been flying with 2.4 since 2013 and started with the down the line electronic controls back in 1991

We have added a carrier event for St Louis in June of 2018 with Bill Calkins and Bob Heywood running the contest. The St Louis group here (Lafayette Esquadrille) is only providing the bags and the carrier deck (permanent). Should be a good time!
