Title: Nostalgia Carrier rules?
Post by: Paul Smith on July 10, 2011, 06:43:50 AM
I flew Nostalgia Profile & Class I at The Nats and had a good time with it.  Upon returning home I examined the rules and found out that I didn't understand very much about what was going on.

The published rules say "according to the 1974-75 Rule Book".  I don't have one of these handy so maybe some can answer these:

1.  Was Low Speed calculated the OLD WAY, three times the difference between high & low MPH?  The NEW (current) WAY is 10 time times the ratio.  So if your high and low were 75 and 25 MPH, the low speed score would be 150 the old way and and 30 the new way.

2.  Twins?  In the days of Fred Randell, there was no bonus for twins, but you could stop one engine for low speed without penalty.  Under current rules, you get a 20-point bonus, but you lose half the low speed points if you stop either engine before the low is complete.  So what's the deal if somebody makes a Tiggercat for Nostalgia?

I have a copy of the 1974-75 rules from an old NCS newsletter. They still were using the "old" scoring then. The "new scoring was put in place in or about 1980. It also says "Models powered by two or more engines must keep all engines running through low-speed phase of flight to garner full points for speed differential. One engine running of two or more will score only half of differential." And there was no multi engine bonus.

I only did a very quick search for these rules online, but didn't find them. Does somebody know where to get the '74-'75 carrier rules online? They really need to be included with the rest of the nostalgia rules.

I know for sure that the old scoring system went out at the end of 1975 because all the records were wiped clean and there was a flurry of record-setting contests in early 1976.  Also, most-all of the go-fast guys who did well on at high speed quit carrier at that time.

I'm a bit puzzled as to why the cutoff date for designs is so long after the rules change (1978), but it's a moot point since nobody was designing any "old-rules" stuff after mid-1975 anyway.

John, this makes reference to the 1974 AMA rules, but does not include them. There's the rub! Have you found the 1974 AMA rules listed online anywhere? I still have a paper copy from a 1997 NCS newsletter, but obviously not everyone does.

Bill,
To my knowledge the AMA rules are not on line anywhere, I have a copy somewhere but not handy.
