Title: New Aussie Wildcat
Post by: Paul Stein on March 03, 2010, 02:41:59 AM
Chaps,

A few photos of Mat Shears new Wildcat. First flights were powered by a clapped OS40 FSR and has since been re-powered by a GMS40 donk. A real beauty....

More photos available at the web address below.... Categories/Navy Carrier/Events..

The plane looks great and I like the deck.  It is more like a real deck.  I would like some details on the bellcrank that is on the plane.  I can see it is not J-Roberts nor Brodak.  Great pics on the site also. H^^

The bellcrank looks like a typical "two old bellcranks bolted together" rig, except that the builder has used fibre rather existing metal bellcranks. It apprears that this unit has an unusually short throw and a limited arc of rotation, which forces it to have a very long output arm.  But the basic priniciple is the same.

I also notice that the plane has a muffler and exhaust pressure. Any comments on that??

After a second look I am not sure that the exhaust is plumbed to the tank!!

Yes it is plummed for pressure if you look close.  I don't think it makes that much difference.  But, remember this is in Australia and they have different rules.  I like their deck with only 4 cables.  It looks like it gives more takeoff area.   Will go double check their rules on that.   H^^

European (Australia too) decks are 4 feet wide 32 feet long and 1 foot off the ground and use 4 wires. They also use 40 engines with mufflers required. Muffler pressure is OK.
There is a rules proposal this cycle to allow 40s in AMA profile, tell your contest board rep what you think so he can vote your wishes.     MIke

Paul, offshore rules as per engine size for profile are elligible for the Postal Carrier Contest. Slight reduction of high speed score per latest rules for .40's.  Please email me for a complete set of rules and join in the fun  this year.

I would go with stock .40's on muffler pressure and no sliders. H^^

Yup.. quite common here...  muffler and/or engine pressure is OK... no tuned pipes or tuned mufflers allowed..

The big clincher is no sliders....

Carrier is just not that popular here.  I dont know why... perhaps because you need a carrier deck, which is a lot of effort to carry and setup???

I dont know of anyone in NSW flying Carrier, it seems to be confined to the Vics at the moment, but as the saying goes, "Build it and they will come". :)

Cheers

Hi All,

Very flattered to have photos of my model here, nice comments too...
The model was designed the same day I saw the photos of the new Aussie carrier appear in the local CL newsletter. I had not considered carrier before and was blown away that someone would go to so much effort to build the deck for the CL community, so to speak. Anyway, the thing got started and hung on the wall awaiting a finish for about a year before I summoned up the courage to paint it - not my favorite aspect of the hobby by a long chalk.
Due to my initial enthusiasm and total lack of experience the design is quite flawed - it has a scale profile for one thing, a misreading of the rules caused that! Also had big balloon wheels on a long stalky U/C. I say had because after the first outing I cut the U/C down drastically and fitted teamrace wheels to improve the high speed run. I also cut off the tail wheel and fitted a stronger one with a stooge loop so I can practice on my own. There are flaps which were cable operated but that system has been replaced by an adjustable wire linkage to the arrester hook. The bellcrank is copied from a British article using bushed fibre as it is easier to cut with hand tools than steel. The workings of the control system are still a mystery to me, I see it moving but why and how are a puzzle...Lots to think about and tinker with. Still, I rather like the tubby thing and it seems to fly OK for a first go. I now have the GMS 40 installed and have flown it at my club in very blustery conditions. The engine has much more power than the OS and of course starts beautifully unlike its predecessor. I look forward to trying it on the carrier again soon.

Regards, Mat

Centrifugal force wants to pull the throttle closed. Your throttle lever opposes that, at the same time allowing independent elevator movt.

Mat, at least you are giving it a try.  Also hope you keep having fun.

Warren, the first contests that I CD'd here in Kansas/Missouri USA were Navy Carrier and Stunt.  The carrier deck was laid out on a paved surface using our rules of the time.  I was even event director at some of our local meets in which carrier was laid out on the grass.  Take off was a problem for one individual until I told him not to hold so much up on the handle.  It was also easier on planes flying over the grass.  Maybe a come back in Carrier flying. H^^

For Newbies,Wanna-bies, Retreads, or whom ever, the deck problem is solved with the rules folr the Postal Carrier Contest.  A deck is not needed, nor are arresting lines needed either.  PLEASE,PLEASE! Email me for the theory and rules for this ever growing contest.  I can receive PM messages, but for some unkown reason, I cant answer any as they bounce back.

email me ...<mootz@bmi.net>  or <ukeyman@justice.com>  for your set.

PS  Prizes now are worth over $600 and growing! Attached picture is of one of our latest kits (semi-ARC) for .15 carrier and PCC competition. This one is a "stand way bgack and squint "semi-scale Wildcat.

Here's the other 2 .15's. A MO-1 and a Zero. As with the Wildcat, these are built along the same way and for the same purpose...FUN!
