Claire Seiverling Mauler
« on: November 26, 2012, 09:31:57 PM »
Someone posted plans of Claire's Mauler on this forum (I think) some time ago; does anyone know what the wingspan is/was?

Edit to add: The plan was from MAN April '64; it was/is posted on the Australian carrier site.

Thanks,
Jim

The span is 30". AMA PLans Service has the plan. It is # 30553.

Bob,
Thanks for the info.  I tried scaling the plans from the few stated dimensions but wasn't confident with the results.

I really want to build a .60-.65 Carrier Nostalgia model and at my age it will probably be the only one I get to build, unless I drop some other projects :).

Having lots of trouble deciding which model will give the best results------I need HELP!! n~

Thanks,
Jim

There's a Mauler kit on Ebay right now. If memory serves, it can be yours for the buy-it-now price of $125 with FREE shipping!

If you want a different size for the Mauler Greg, the AMA Plan Guy, can scale to any span you specify. The price is very reasonable.

I don't know what size you are contemplating but if you choose to go this route a span of 34" will size the model to just take a .65 racing engine from the era. It will be snug but doable.

The J.Roberts Mauler is a really nice model but is too big to be in the same performance league with the Sterling Guardian and other Guardians from the Classic Era.

Guys,
I have working plans for both of the Maulers and since I want to update the structure I would prefer building from the plans.

The J Roberts is a bit larger than the Seiverling so might be better for the larger, heavier engine.  I have .60 size Guardian plans too--------I guess the help I need is to figure out which model will give the best chance of success.
I don't have immediate plans to compete with the 60ish model, but maybe in a year or so, after I fly the profile Guardian a while.

Thanks for any input.

The .60 Guardian will out score the Roberts Mauler in Nostalgia CL II. The Mauler is a great flying airplane but will come up short on the top end required to prevail under Nostalgia scoring. The Guardian is also a great flying model and with a period correct racing engine will provide you the full CL II experience. It's a real "E" ticket ride. Hang on tight. It's a thrill.

Bob,
Thanks--that's the kind of input I need!  I have a Rossi 60 and a Rossi 65 to pick from (both SE versions) and a Rossi 65 RIRE that I could use.  Any comments on them?

The Rossi engine was the class of the field. If you could have seen Ray Wilman (sp?) fly. Oh wow! For Nostalgia a non-Schnurle will qualify for the engine bonus. Any of your engines will do just fine. What sort of throttles do they have, if any?

The two SE engines have the 8mm or might be 8.5mm, I think the Ducted  Fan 65 may hae 10 mm, all Rossi carbs.
I can put 8 or 8.5 on the DF engine to tame it a bit.

The "negative" on the RIRE DF engine is that the RI feature requires lots of room behind the engine for the throttle, but it sure sounds good!

I'm not sure a 10x6 will be enough prop for either of these engines; maybe a Xoar 10x7?

Almost forgot, I have a Rossi 53 SE that turns the Xoar 10x7 over 15K, it's a bit lighter than the larger engines too.  What would you think about it?

In the day, the single by-pass engines swung a 10 x 8 Rev-Up. The exhaust slide / fuel metering systems were pressure fed and used the wide open 12mm c/l speed intake.

Schnurles need a little less prop to allow them to rev.

I would stick with the .65 side exhaust. It will do the job just fine. There's no substitute for cubic inches.

I have never had time to fly Nostalgia (except back when it wasn't Nostalgia at all) but have seen lots of Nostalgia competition. The winner is almost always the one who puts in a decent flight most reliably, and not necessarily the fastest airplane. So you might want to just build whatever appeals to you and practice, practice, practice. My first carrier model was a Roberts/Sturdibuilt Mauler with a K&B .40 FISE. It wasn't the fastest by any means, but it made the whole flight more often and took home a lot of first place trophies. It was also a lot of fun to fly. A side benefit of the Mauler is that it has fewer moving parts (flaps and rudder were fixed, unlike the Guardian) and this also aids in reliability. I can't tell you how many Guardians have had the flaps come down during high speed. The Mauler, being larger, could get a better low speed without the moving parts.
So, build what you love and don't worry about the score. The score will come if you love flying it enough to get out there and practice.

My Guardian plan is the Bill Boss version----only ~243 sq. in. wing. Not much for a .65.

When I had compared the JR Mauler wing area to the Boss Guardian wing area, I had thought that the Mauler would be better/easier (and mechanically simpler) for a student Carrier flyer, even though not as fast as the Guardian but with lighter wing loading.

Think I will do the Mauler first and if I survive that, go for the Guardian........

Pete, did you build the Mauler with the wing incidence as on the plan?

Any other advice is welcome.

We plan to have a full length grass carrier deck with "legal dimensions" for our fall event in 2013.  If we could get enough support we would hold a contest event, along with our CLPA contest.  We have no experience with carrier flying or judging, so we would need lots of help and advice.

Thanks guys.

I built the Mauler pretty much as per the plans/kit. The wing incidence was stock. I built it with the inverted engine (it really looks way better than when some put the engine in upright) so I would often have to turn the airplane over to get it started. (We didn't have electric starters then.) If I were building one now, I would review the hook release (although I recall no problems with the stock one,) and also make the hook a bit longer than the stock design and use 3/32" music wire, as is common practice now. The model balanced well with the .40, but you might leave a little box in the back to add BBs or some other weights to balance because your Rossi will be a bit heavier.
