Carrier test trials
« on: September 09, 2009, 10:27:21 AM »
Well I have built a deck and we decided to test it out this past weekend. There are some parts missing because not everything was quite finished but we wanted to try it anyways. We had a ton of fun!

Hey - a new carrier is launched --

Is it full size (the pix at least make it look, uhm, compact!)?

Whatever, don't forget that for a contest you also need a 'sloped' ramp, even if it only has to slope 1 3/4".

(Ahh - looking at a couple of the pictures a little closer, it appears that you have a full-size 'free-roll' takeoff portion and only half of the arresting area set up.  I presume that the other half is available if needed.)

We need to make one more section and the ramp along with 5 more arresting lines.  We only had enough sand bags for 5 lines.  It also needs to be painted.  I still have another month and a half before the contest.  I will have some more pics in a little bit.

Oh, no! Now you have to cut up the rest of your blue jeans?  (been there, done that)

For paint, I'll look at the can in my shed -- whatever it was it was inexpensive, pretty fuel proof and gray.  I think it was "Garage Floor Paint" or "Concrete Floor Paint" something similar from Lowe's - one gallon was more than enough.  We painted a white strip about a foot wide down the center of each section, then masked that with 2 inch masking tape and used a roller to spread the gray.  You may also want to mask and paint the '40 inch' takeoff limiting line.

It will probably be painted with some automotive single stage, more than likely chassis paint.  If I have some time then I want to build a superstructure for it too.  The only other thing is coming up with a name for it. Here are some more pics.

Pictures look great as well as what there is of the deck.  I have a suggestion for the name.  Name it in honor of your Dad.  He was quite a carrier enthusiest.  Even after all these years he is still missed.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

He is indeed still missed ...

Your deck would have to be the "Brett Smith II" (and you could add the number "09" to the bow).  Ours is "00" (built in 2000) and is named the Brett Smith.
