This contest is a yearly 2-day event scheduled late in October and held in Phoenix AZ. This year the weather was beautiful (as usual this time of the year in Phoenix) with temps in the mid 80s, light breezes both days, and lots of Carrier flying. Here are the scores and some pictures. I hope the scores are readable. There was a lot of pictures being taken so hopefully someone else will add some more pictures. Eric

It was a good contest with a large number of flights on Sunday. A broad range of entries from nostalgia to electric and everything in between. I think everyone enjoyed.

WOW....thanks for posting the pics. Very nice selection of planes there. Quick question cause I know nothing about carrier. How come the MO-1 and the Guardian are so popular in carrier? H^^

The MO-1 has the ideal shape (square cross section fuselage, lots of wing area, ample tail plane areas) to perform well in Carrier competition. Very simple to build, especially for CL-1&2 (scale carrier classes) and you can build all 3 AMA Carrier class planes off of one set of plans. Plus there is not that much documentation about the plane and they are (to me) a bit ugly so I don't think they are never ever looked at closely. They do have ever attribute that the carrier flier is looking for.

As for the Guardian...In the Classic Era the Guardian also had nearly ideal proportions. The general goal was to find a plane that offered the smallest fuselage frontal area for high speed while still having enough wing area to manage a respectable slow flight. The later piston era Attack Bombers had those attributes. Many of those planes were low wing, like the AM-1 Mauler and the Blackburn Firebrand, but the Guardian's mid-wing was an added plus.

That is a Dehavilland (SP?) Sea Vampire - in Profile. Design is by Bill Calkins. That particular model is Bob Frogner's.

I have been flying the Vampire for the last 6 or 7 years and think it is a really good plane. Might be a tick slow but it hangs really well and is a very nice looking plane in flight. Any other questions I'd be glad to help. In any way I can
