Joe's new NW .40 Profile ship
« on: February 16, 2014, 10:19:56 AM »
Here is my latest project for our popular NW .40 Sport Profile Carrier event.  Because the rules state that the plane will not receive scale points I thought I'd try something a bit different looking. I did this to point out the possible flaw in our rules.  I can for see the time when this event is morphed into planes that have absolutely no relationship to planes that have been flown in actual navy service.  Remember the type of planes I'm referring to before the NCS changed the rules giving 10 scale points in profile?  Anyway here it is almost finished, with just a minor patching job to call it quits.  As per NW rules this one is powered by an OS .35FP using muffler pressure.  Brodak dope over silk span of 312 squares.  The dark rectangular section of the outboard wing is the 2.4 battery and receiver section that is covered with a removable clear plastic cover so I can easily change the battery and also to insure that the battery is turned on and off by a visual check.  The weight is 35 ounces, ready to fly.  Really stupid looking as my late business partner would say.

I don't think I've seen any 2 planes in S40 yet that looked alike and only a small portion had any resemblance to "your Carrier Plane" type. The S40 planes that I have seen at the "North West Regional" contest(only NW contest I attend) have all been nice looking well built model airplanes with some form of military paint scheme and supporting decals. Do you really think that requiring the planes to be built to "your Carrier Plane Type" would have contributed to the success of this event? I've enjoyed watching these gentlemen fly their planes and nail the deck in an event that is very simple with just the minimum amount of rules. Mike Potter has given all of us a new carrier event that has attractted new flyers and planes and for now lets "keep it simple stupid" and "don't mess with whats not broke stupid" theory.  Eric

Ron, I couldn't agree more!  However with that said I am on the record of being just one of two people that voted against allowing 2.4 in the Carrier events.  So, way did I fall into the "dark side".  Basically, with my personal life in a three year turmoil with my wife's health I really needed something new to divert my nerves, take my daily trials away and to give this aging lousy builder/finisher something hard to learn.  Ron, it has kept my sanity (what little I had left) and forced me to concentrate.  I guess I have to end this by noting that while 2.4 is sometimes fun I still can not get any of my 4 ships to score better than my standard planes.  I doubt that I ever will!  Hope top see you in April.

Eric, I think I have been a fairly good advocate of the NW event.  Perhaps my lack of clarity has led you to feel otherwise.  My Apologies.  All I was trying to say was that I WOULD HATE TO SEE THE NW EVENT MORPH INTO WHAT HAPPENED TO PROFILE YEARS AGO. I have been on record not only here but in my column in CLW that the NW Profile carrier event may very well be the event that saves Carrier, which is my main thrust, and will continue to be just that.  I am concerned with the possibility that somebody will come up with a "Condor" type of plane and blows everybody away.  Should  that happen, and I believe there is at least one person thinking along those lines, it MIGHT lead to the detriment of this great event. As far as being stupid, well that's a well know fact already as many on this column can attest to I believe.

The fact that your 2.4 planes don't score any better than your regular planes is the point that many people have been trying to make.  It isn't any performance advantage over conventional 3 line it is just easier for some people to set up and use.

I forgot to add the following.  When Gerry Deneau first developed .15 Profile Carrier he never thought that .15 would develop the way it has.  He told me that .15 was set up to be so very easy to get into flying Carrier.  Then what happened?  Specialized planes that no longer look like anything that ever flew off a Carrier and reverse crank engines.  While Bill Bishop's Sniper sure is a winning combination with a hot zoot engine it doesn't fit what Gerry had in mind.  My fear is that NW .40 Sport Profile could go the same route as .15 Carrier.  Also, and for he umpteenth time, I THINK ,MIKE POTTER CAME UP WITH A REAL WINNER WITH THE NEW NW .40 EVENT.  I support it wherever and whenever I can.  I built the latest to show how the event could change into just another "Pro" event.  I wanted it  be so radical looking that we could stop it's development in its tracks.   The only way I could make it even uglier was to have my face pictured on the outboard wing! (And that would really be stupid)
