Hi John. Actually during WW2, a few of the Essex class carriers landed planes while going full speed astern as they had cross deck pendants, arresting wires, on the forward section of the flight deck. There are photos of this out there.  With bomb or storm damage aft, as happened, they could still recover their air group. H^^
