Check out the Scale section!
« on: July 12, 2014, 01:05:04 PM »
The Scale entries at the AMA Nats is outstanding.  Why can't the NCS see what proper promotion can do for an event?  We need to sweep away most of the NCS leadership (leave the Sect., he is doing a very good job) and promote our end of the hobby! NCS voting for officers will soon be here!

I think Bill Bischof (spelling) does a great job of promoting carrier.   He has come up with some good designs and even redid a couple of kits.   He has even posted on here how to set planes up plus making stuff that we can use.   I myself don't practice enough to hang a plane, but after flying a Bi-Slob it is not that hard.   Just have to get reliable engine runs like in stunt.  Even in scale it takes reliable engines to get a good flight.  Watched a couple of gentlemen work with their scale and carriers getting the engines to working for the area we were in.   I need to build a new carrier plane that maybe I can get back in the groove.  The old Bearcat just does not like to hang with the controls set up like the kit shows.   I think we need two classes of profile carrier to maybe get people going.  The Northwest group is trying with their .40 class with specified engines.   I listened to Bob Reeves talk to John Vlna about the set up of a carrier plane and the hanging portion.   He makes it sound simple.   By the way brought home two kits from Brodaks,  Bob's  Fury for .15 carrier and a PT-22 for scale.   Hope the Brodak .15 is enough engine and can't thank Tom Martin for the he sold me for the scale plane.   The instructions say it is a low RPM big prop engine for scale flying.

Gee Joe, you sure seem to know a lot about the NCS. That is you carry on about what an evil group they are and if we got rid of "them" everything would get much better in things carrier. Gosh, I didn't see you at the NATs this year? Oh my, you weren't there last year either? Oh my gosh you weren't there 3 years ago either come to think of it? Not that the NATS is everything and all but I have not seen you at the North West Regional in the many times that I have attended that event flying carrier? So what gives with you Joe? Why does Joe Just think he could improve on what is going on now. I thought about what could happen to the NATS participation this year while I was there and it occurred to me that if you had been in charge of the Carrier events at the NATs this year could you have run the event or would you have been there?? I see and compete with the same group of people in the 7 or so contest that I attend yearly and every time I go to the NATs, and I have never seen you.

We all would like carrier to be more popular, we build and contest our planes any chance we get and where are you and your 2 other committee men?

Where is Joe?
Eric

Eric, I have run the Carrier competition twice, 1989 and 1995, worked the team in 90, 91, 92 93, 94.  I attended the 84 Nats and helped a bit there as well.  I flew Carrier at the Regionals, Portland, B.C., Canada (2nd place in 86 at The Canada Nats), Numerous times at Richland,Wa. and in Detroit.  I was the NCS President for period of time, and instituted the "Rookie of the Year award (when was that prize last given by the way) As well as instituting the team award given to Art Johnson this year (the award is named after his deceased wife by the way) I have flown .15 and Sportsman Carrier at the Brodak Fly-in in PA.  On top of that I have in recent years designed , built and sold over 200 profile kits (mostly in the .36 size venue)
I will never be a top notch Carrier pilot, and that's ok as I have more fun than most just punching holes in the sky.
Now, I will never  go to another Carrier Nats in Muncie. Why bother!  I don't give a wiz about being a champ, and as long as there are just a few participants why bother let alone spend $Thousands as I did in the past. On top of that I really don't like the fact that there is  absolutely no growth leadership anymore in the NCS.  When I was the President there were bout 140 members. Now what is the number? Maybe 30-40.

Now Eric, and I doubt I should make this statement, but what the heck.  My wife is seriously ill and as my own health at 77 is a bit tough I can no longer travel to all the meets you do.  All I care about is seeing the NCS grow, with a different emphasis (fun, comradeship and skill level competition.
I admire your skill and flying ability Eric, other than that.....(Nuff said)

I forgot to mention that I entered and flew Carrier at 3 of the Vincennes Nats, the two WA state Nats and the Mass. Nats.  Another thing to mention is that out of the 200 Carrier kits I sold and were given some very good feedbacks, only about 6 or so of the persons that bought these kits have ever shown up as having entered any Carrier competition.  There is continuing interest in beginner type of carrier flying, but no push at all from the NCS other than the continued emphasis on coming to the Nats and how to be a top notch competitor which has its place but should not be the end all of carrier flying.
Several years ago I instituted a "Postal" Carrier competition.  Over 3 years we had a fair amount of participation and in those 3 years we gave away over $2500 in prizes, including free memberships to the NCS.  Following up with two of the free membership winners I discovered that they never got any HLL newsletters.  A great way to promote Carrier, right?

My concern is that the NCS is dwindling to the point of collapse.  We will only increase participation in this great hobby/sport by building new Carrier fliers and then perhaps it wont be such a chore to get a full support team at the Nats like we had not that many years ago.

Build the participation by offering at least 2 skill levels. Forget Sportsman, morph that into the lower skill class giving someone the chance to compete against the skill level of others of like ilk. They intuirn can learn a bunch by being timers, pull testers or whatever up close and personal.

Eric the reason I no longer go to the Regionals is because of a "Death Letter" I received and unwhittenly left on the table where my wife read it and made me promise to not go to anymore Regionals.  The letter has been distroyed but it has been read by two friends in the Tri-Cities and another in Michigan while visiting us 6 years ago.

Before I die, and more than likely that wont be too far away, my dream is that the NCS grows into an organization that appeals to all levels of Carrier flying. A time when the "bottom feeders" of the sport can witness the skill of guys like you Eric, Burt, Pete. Bill and who ever.

And, while is was "not there" too often ,myself and my partner and friend Jim Carpenter (now recently deceased) designed, tested, promoted and sold nearly 1000 of the Ukey series of ARFs which kept me rather busy.   I think I know a thing or two about promotion! The sale of Ukeys brought guys and gals into the beginning of PA and many now are advanced fliers.  The same kind of promotional outlook can and should make flying Navy Carrier a growing rather than declining part of the hobby.
