Nostalgia Carrier, opinions wanted.
« on: September 27, 2012, 12:32:24 PM »
HI All,

I would like some opinions on a first build for Class I (.40 Size?) Nostalgia Carrier.  Plans or kit is OK.

I am in recovery from serious Chemo Therapy and am planning my projects for the winter.

Thanks!
Bill

You may wish to consider the following:

A1-E & A1-H Skyraider by Marvin Martinez, M.A.N. February, 1977. Air Age Stores still sells the plans.

Grumman Guardian by Bill Netzeband, American Modeler February, 1962. AMA sells the plan, # 36212

Martin AM-1 Mauler by Clair Sieverling, M.A.N. April, 1964. AMA sells the plan. Don't have the number handy.

Howard Mottin did a nice Skyraider, published in American Aircraft Modeler, January, 1969. However, I am not aware of a source for the plan.

These are all straight forward planes. The only drawback on the Mauler is its inverted engine. However, it wouldn't take much to make it a side mount.

Have fun.

I built two Mottin Skyraiders.  One as an Enya 60-powered Class II in 1974 and one as a Class I Nostalgia in 2009.

Air Age is the parent for Model Airplane News. Check out the following:

http://www.airagestore.com/

Click on the drop down under PLANS and then click on RC PLANES. On the next menu click on CONTROLINE. Everything is shown with a picture. Actually, there are several Carrier models available.

My Class II was overweight with the 60.  I built the new one with an OS Max 25 and it goes good, even though it doesn't use the whole available 40.  Mottin won the Nat with an ST 40, but his Class II didn't work either.

The Martinez and Mottin designs are very similar. One big difference is in the engine mounting. Martinez uses traditional beams while Mottin used a Tatone radial mount. He set the plane up to convert between CL I & CL II.

The Skyraider models exhibit the same no nonsense, all business characteristics of the full size plane. Outstanding combat service history. And, for what it is worth, Cal Smith won the very first Carrier event with a Skyraider design, although it was built to a 44" span. Both of the CL I models are ever so slightly over 30".

You can buy the Mottin plan in electronic form on ebay right now. By the way Mr. Little, what's the latest on the Crusader?

Sterling Guardian flies nice with a K&B 40 Gray case FISE or ST 40 ABC FISE, definately Nostalgia legal and bonus for motor.

HI Bill,

I still have to cover and paint.  The neuropathy (nerve damage) from the chemo is still slightly affecting my hands and my legs are still very weak.  This has kept me gong down the stairs a whole lot.  very painful at times.  It is getting better.

Paul posted some pictures of his Skyraider build a while back. What I liked about it is that it loopks to be an easier build than many (all?) of the Class 1 designs I have seen...no flaps, box fuselage, etc. and apparently flies very well. On my future build list. 8)
