Markings/Decals/ trim
« on: January 26, 2011, 04:20:38 PM »
I bought two built class 1 ships several years ago. My intent was to use them later. Well now is later. both need some work but main item is decals / markings etc.
I can cut monocote trim sheets for letters and numbers. Stars and bars another story. Sig sells some decals but very limited choice. One plane is fullbody Skyraider/ other is a Brittish night Fighter/bomber Defiant. This plane did serve with Royal Navy. Anyway both use a rear intake engine/ ST G-40RV/ other HP .40RV.
So I am open to ideas on Britt markings. Main ones are country and a plane # and maybe marking of a unit that had   Skyraiders. The Britt. just need the roundels.

It's been posted here before but I'd check with Control Line Central.  Emily,Jim's wife is a very talented graphics/stencil/decal type person and has done many war bird insignias. For an example of her work, look at CLC's vendor forum and the Dauntless thread. The decals on the plane were done by her.  8)

Brodak has British decals and I'm pretty sure they are for a .40 size plane. Major Decals also makes British decals and I think they may make .40 and .60 size. Major Decals are sold by Tower and other mail order outfits.  Eric

Hey Eric! Check with Major Decals directly. Do a Google search and they come up. They have far more choices than Tower carries. They have a line of 1/12 scale insignias which may be about right, plus bigger and smaller sizes. All are available as stickers or water decals.

Hi Dan,

I agree with Eric and Bill on the "Major Decals" line.  Been using them since the early '70s at least.  Way back, they were water slide only, IIRC., but I have used their "stick-on's", also, and have had no problems without a coating over them for fuel proofing (up to 15% nitro) nor have they came off..  Only problem is guessing the right size!  But I believe that on their site they list the dimensions of the markings somewhere. ;D

CLC is also another good choice.  I see a British roundel as one of their samples and they can make them to your exact size needs.  Just give them the diameters of the different placements.

Hi Tom,

There is something that always catches my eye when I see a British Night Fighter scheme in all black with red markings, etc..

That BP Defiant looks sharp!

Thats what I have is Boulton Paul Defiant. Just did the gun turret and it looks cool. Mine is done in lighter blue color that looks pretty good. The Skyraider is a ulta lite colored gray. Looks white but is gray. just need the rondels for Britt. and stars and bars for AD Skyraider.

HI Dan,

"After further review", my suggestion would be to just contact CLC and give them the dimensions for the roundels, stars and bars, fuselage lettering, etc., for you models.  That way you can get exactly what you want. ;D

I have 3 books on Military Aviation Library WW2 Aircraft. One is USA, another is German and last British. Each book has 61 pages jammed packed with photos. Some color and great inner cover art of star planes like P-51/  P-40/ ME-109/ FW 190/ Spitfire etc. I could make my own trimcote decals but will try a few places. Thanks for advice.
Cheers,Dan

Hi Dan,

You're good to go!  If you need any help, I will dig out all my reference books on WWII fighters.  I had a very large reference library built up, but shelved it when I left the "plastic model" scene.  It got WAY worse than any thing in the C/L world. ;D

Thanks bill , but have qutie a few books also. Bought some more trimcote and made roundels. They look good to me. Cutting some letters and numbers. Numbers are tricky with trim cote as they stick right now and will tear or fold in a heart beat.
Dan

Another day latter and did secals for the Britt ship and its awesome. Thr gun turret looks great. Its amazing a little panel lines here and there/ decals/numbers and presto nice looking plane. Looks likw old school Carrier class1. I wonder how many WW2 full scale did hovering in the wind !!   LL~ LL~

If you guys have seen my P-39 and the Sheeks Spitfire as well as a few other planes of mine will see the graphics.   I don't use any trim material like Monokote Trim Sheets.   I cut my graphics from scraps of Monokote I have laying around.  Yes sometimes I have to go buy a new roll.  Just draw your graphics on paper.  Lay it over the Monokote, with every thing taped to a glass pane.   Start cutting using new X-Acto blades and straight edges.  Any curves are cut first.  From a distance you can't tell they are hand cut.  Use a trim iron to put them down.   Also put them on before the final coats of clear.   H^^

Hi Doc,

Those markings look just fine. ;D

As I am getting older, and taking care of the wife, and getting lazier, and I do not have the time, and the Moon is not in the Seventh House, and Jupiter is not aligned with Mars, and,,,,,,,,,, do I have to be the BOM of my own markings or can you or someone else cut them for me, or can I  (gasp) BUY THEM????

(just kidding!)

Just tell the great little lady at Control Line Central what you are looking for.  I copied the ones I got from Brodak several years ago.  Just size thm to fit the plane.  I hope BOM doesn't apply to graphics. LL~ LL~ LL~

I will go to CLC for the markings, probably!  I have a whole bunch of decals I "found" (!!!) the other day cleaning our a couple drawers!  It was a very pleasant surprise.  Some Major, Brodak, Sig, and others!
