MVVS 15 and 21
« on: December 28, 2009, 08:12:59 PM »
Does anybody have any experience with these engines?  I am considering using them on a tigercat and just wanting some opinions before I buy them.

Thanks
David

Well it all depends. If you want to build a competitive "AMA Profile Carrier" plane there may be better choices. If you want to build a carrier plane for the fun of it and also to compete in local contests then your choice of engines may be OK.
I use the MVVS .15 for competitive .15 carrier. The only reason I use this engine is that for a while they were available with a reverse rotation crank. As far as power goes the .15 MVVS is not as powerful as the Conquest .15 engines. I don't know anything about the MVVS 21 engines. I am under the impression that MVVS has cut back on building IC engines and at this time is only building the .15 in diesel?? As Joe says, it would be very hard to get parts for them if something broke.
At one time I thought very seriously about building a "AMA Profile Carrier" Tigercat for competition that would have used a Nelson .15 and a Nava Rossi .21 for engines. The draw back that I saw was the .21 engine should be on the inside wing and the .15 engine would be on the outside wing. I found that the Nava Rossi was very heavy and I would end up with a lot of tip weight in the outside wing tip on a already heavy plane so finally gave up on the idea.  Eric

Why not just go with two .15's?  I still remember the year Terry Herron won Class I Carrier with a .29 size engine.  I was told his score was good enough he could have won Class II if it had been allowed.  This was was at the last NATS he attended I beleive.

I considered two 15's but the 21 was going to be used on my Cl II Tigercat when the profile is not in use.  The profile tigercat is just to have fun at contests with and I will have another spearfish for the Nats.

MVVS are redily available overseas . The later ones are tidier looking than the D7 which was a round exhaust TRS for pipe in glow version (Both were glow or diesel)
Some  around Australia . was a 90s one , current version has blue anodising. And after 40 years practise building them, theyre probly not to bad , or slower than 70s.

going to 'drop' the outer for the slow run ? Current ST Marine is Avail in U.S. for $ 100. Aledgedly 2 Hp @ 31.000 so if you wanna live dangerously Super Tigre 18 Marines.

I have a used .15 MVVS that I got in a trade and a nearly new MVVS .21 . I don't have anything that I plan to use them on. If someone wants them I'll make them a great deal. Just let me know and/or send me an email. I'll be out of town thru the 4th.

Hi Kelly,

Are those MVVS displacements in cubic inches, or centimeters?

The reason I ask, is that I have two MVVS 1.5cc diesels, and one 2cc diesel, all new in the box, and those are smaller than the engines mentioned in this thread. I've no idea what they are worth, and wondered what you are asking for yours, and if they are sold.

Hey Bill,
sorry about the tardiness on a reply. I have been real busy and forgot to check. I gave the .15 size mvvs to Mike Gibson for use at the Boy's Ranch. I still have the .21 (3.5cc) MVVS. It may have been run 15 or 20 minutes at the most. It has a rotatable case so it can be used as rear exhaust or side exhaust.

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for the reply.

Apparently, the smaller .09ci and .12ci diesels that I have, are long out of production, and spare parts are no longer available. For that reason, I'm very reluctant to run any of them.

They appear to be very well made, and nicely finished, but the paper work that came with them explains that they were assembled with very tight fits. Final piston/cylinder honing is to be done by the owners, or with very careful break-in running. (At least I think that's what it says.)  ;D

Hey Bill,
I think they are pretty good engines, but parts are a problem in this country. I think they are still sold elsewhere. It came with a large r/c carb and I replaced it with a venturi.

Kelly,

Hobby Club has a listing for MVVS/Modela, but only has a few glow engines listed.

Hey Bill,
Thanks for the info. I don't have any plans for it right now. If anyone wants to play with it just let me know. I'll make it very affordable.
