Profile Carrier Twin engine choices
« on: September 21, 2009, 11:14:03 AM »
Hello all,

Since Profile carrier limits the total cubic inches to .36 that limits the engines you can use for a twin engine profile carrier.

What engines are worth using in Profile carrier if you can't exceed .36 cubic inches?

I thought very seriously about a F7F Tigercat that would have a Nelson .15 on the inside wing and a Novarrossi .21 on the outside wing. That would be the ideal set up as far as weight distribution is concerned but not how you would want the power during the flying portion of the carrier event. I thought about it for quite a while and then built a F2G-1 instead. I dont think you could build a competetive twin for the AMA carrier events.   Eric

I think a light Grumman F5F Skyrocket with a pair of Conquest 15s might get close and what a sound! Mike

What size plane? What sort of performance?

Just curious.

Thanks.

It was a Profile of my own design - about 40" span, flaps (all of them).  I drove the throttles through a 90 deg. bellcrank for each one - in fact the control system was kind of Rube Goldberg looking, but I managed to stuff it all in a pretty thin wing (about 320 sq. in.), IIRC.

Actually it all worked pretty well - the high speed was nothing to write home about - probably about 75-80, but I never did any optimizing, never messed with props or fuel.

Low speed was pretty good, for non-slider equipped model.

The one time I actually entered Profile with it, it was windier than H*** and I took 8 missed landings and got it off again, finally arrested on the 9th pass - Thank you very much Tricycle Landing Gear.

I just sport and demo flew it most of the time - a flying buddy had another twin and we used to fly demo's with them together.

Russian made MDS engines used to have a twin ball bearing engine, reportedly having high RPM capability with a displacement of .18 cu inch.  I know of several people who had planned on using two of these for profile carrier.  Nicely made,  Nice throttle.  Weight, with throttle is 6.1 oz.  My idea was to build a Sea Hornet with about 1" = 1' scale which would give a model near the minimum wing area and max wing area requirements for the profile event.

I could not find a current distributer for these MDS engines in this size.  You might have better luck than me in a google search.

There are two of these on eBay right not - one used and one new.  The used one is at

The several I have are not available.

Another choice would be the Cox Conquest .15.  These are showing up often on eBay and sometimes, new ones can be picked off at a good price.

My Tigercat that I fly in CL Profile scale (41" span) would qualify for profile carrier (weight, wing are and size) however the twin OS-15FP's are not enough power to get off the deck. It was scratch built from my own plans

The choices above confirm that I thought..

Kieth....I agree a twin was in order I would just build a DH Hornet from the Whitehead plans and put a pair of 20's or 25's on it and fly the full bodied model in Class I or II.

I have 2 of the MDS 18 NIB. However, parts are non existant and the engines have a real aversion to nitro as did the rest of the MDS line.
There were also quite a few quality issues on carbs if they were good the engine was fine, if not then you had to go looking for a replacement.Horizon gave up on them I guess and developed the Evolution line which is really better then MDS, even if not a rousing success for c/L. yet.

I used a pair of novarossi's on my Tigercat. One 15 and a 21.  They might not be that bad if I can get the plane weight down. This Tigercat is already crashed but I am planning on another one for next year that should be much lighter and with a pair of 15's and no chicken hopper.

Does anybody have any experience with the K&B 18 that Mecoa sells? The spec's look good, and they are available.

We had one out on a combat plane last week - It was to replace an old G23-19 Supertigre which blew up.  The K&B was, ...., uhhmm,  --  "Sporty".  Actually it was more like "Doggy".  Maybe would get up to "Sporty" with enough prop testing and nitro, but based on our one data point, we probably won't pursue it.
