I have been experimenting with all foam planes for carrier. The results have been pretty good so I thought I would try to build one suitable for competition. I choose the Seafire Mk-47 for a subject. The model is all pink foam with some carbon tube re-enforcement, and a few bits of plywood and balsa. Span is 30 inches, area 260 sq in. The motor is a Turnigy SK 3530-1400, Volcano 40A ESC, and a 2200 4s 30c battery. Control electronics are U/Tronics, located in the handle. First flights will be this weekend; if successful I’ll sand and paint it.

Looks good. Awaiting a flight report. Might consider not painting it and contact the foam manufacturer for an advertising sponsorship!

Its maiden flight will be this weekend. Never thought of the advertising angle, maybe I'll send a note to Dow, they might at least give me some foam.

Are you using electronic controls for the throttle control with two lines, or using 3-line with a mixture of electronics at the airplane?

It is all electric, the controller(Clancy's) is in the handle, on board is just the esc, battery and motor. Other carrier fliers use the standard 3 line BC to drive a variable resister on board, but I use the same setup for all my electric planes and this is easier in my view. Line drag of the nylon coated lines is a problem, so I make my own lines, simply coat them with water based polyurethane.

Well the seafire flies extremly well. I didn't time any of the flights but it appears to have a high speed in the low 60's, and it hangs very well. The 2200mah battery seems about right. The voltage after a flight was around 3.75 volts which means quite a bit of reserve is available if I can improve my low speed flying.

Turnout at the NATS was low as noted in another thread but my Seafire did well at its first contest. I took 1st in a small field of 3 contestant that flew, 5 registered. Oddly the score was the same for each flight 32secs hi, 100 secs low and 100 landings for 187.5. Foam, carbon fiber and electric forever.

The Controls in the handle John referred to is the Universal U/Tronics Control handle described in my Vendors Corner.
It can be used for Electric via the ESC or Glow using a Servo. Our Junk Yards War entry at the Brodak Fly-In used a Servo to control the Throttle on an OS 25 FSR engine.
