Title: Dual Purpose
Post by: john vlna on October 16, 2016, 12:54:21 PM
If you are into CL you probably are aware of the Annual Ringmaster Fly-A-Thon the first weekend in Oct each year. People all over the world see how many flights of a Ringmaster can be put up. I don’t have this year’s results yet but it’s going to be a lot.

No this isn’t on the wrong board. This year I decided to build a Ringmaster Jr. for the event, but as a carrier flier I thought, why not make it dual purpose, 15 carrier and sport plane for the Fly-A-Thon.  The model is electric of course, that’s all I build these days, and set up for easily using different motors. For the Ringmaster fly I am using a 3536 1000KV motor that I have no idea where I got it from. It will run on 3 cells for sport flying. Carrier will need a more powerful motor for hitting 70MPH, easily swapped in, with a 4 cell battery.
Unfortunately, weather and illness keep me from flying it for the Fly-A-Thon, so no data yet on how a Ringmaster will do in carrier. It is an iconic design and I am sure someone has tried one before.

Color scheme is based on a F4F-3 wildcat flown by the Marines early in WWII.

Tim Wescott won the Sport 40 event in Portland, Oregon this Spring with a Ringmaster and an FP40.  It can be done.

John, great minds and all that...I too am beginning to build a JR RM and plan on using it as a duel ship.  This one will NOT be a take-apart ship. For the last 3 years I have been using a Jr. for the Fly-A-Thon. the next one will have a 32" ply full length doubler on the balsa and under the ply wood doubler as sell.
Get well my good friend!
Joe

 John,

 Is that a sheet wing?

The wing is foam, (3/8 Pink) with a KFm-2 airfoil. Is is a popular RC setup that I have been using for CL for about 10 years now. KFm airfoils are stepped airfoils, here is a link for more info http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1117276 . I have found the KFm-2 quite effect for carrier and have used it on several 15 and 35 profiles before.

Don't worry Doc, I have now been vaccinated for voltage fumes. By the way except for the wing , construction is normal.
I did get it out flying today with the sport motor. I was conservative with the balance, but I think in carrier trim it should hang pretty well. Otherwise no bad habits, as you might expect from a Ringmaster. A good flying design.
