The Dallas Model Aircraft Association held a Carrier and Speed contest on Oct 23-24 2010. Patrick Hempel has a post with full results on the Speed forum. The past few years the Carrier contests were held on the same weekend as the Stunt and Racing contests, and the fliers have been too busy trying to fly 3 events (especially in the hot summer months) and carrier tended to get the short end of the stick. Next year we will reshuffle the schedule to give the Carrier fliers a day of their own to fly, and will advertise the contest better to try and attract fliers from other districts.

Thank you for the post David. Its great to see some results and pictures from Texas. I see Bill flew his Zero (it looks great) and Terry, Dale, and Mike all looking good. It must have been a little breezy or something as the scores look a little low, course we are talking Texas. Thanks again, Eric

I had to sign up for this "stunt" forum because I heard people were talking about me! I am indeed back, with a new airplane, too. The Zero I started on in 2007 as an excuse to try a new line slider design is finally done. I finished it the week before the contest, and got two test/adjustment flights and one practice contest flight. The first timed low speed was 4:49. I was rather pleased! At the contest I flew once in Class one to make sure everything was OK, and then two profile flights. My winning profile flight was a 21.1 /3:49. It was rather windy, and I am happy to say I think my new airplane flies better than the MO-1. The high speed is a little less than what I am used to, but I am flying this plane on 10% nitro. What? Better than an MO-1? 10% nitro? Yes, it is really me. The truth is that I was simply too lazy to do a glass and epoxy finish, so I just slapped some dope on it, thus the 10%. There is probably some more high speed to be had, but for only six flights total it's working great.
In fact, the success of this airplane has inspired me to start working on the next version, with an eye towards a construction article and perhaps a laser cut built up wing kit. It will be the type 32 Zero with the squared off wing tips, but otherwise it would be very similar to my new one. I am also in the designing stages of a 44" class 2 Zero 32. I had some 3 views enlarged to the appropriate size, and they are perfectly proportioned for a carrier model with no fudging required. I just can't decide between the front intake MVVS 61 out of my MO-1, or one of my Webra 61 rear intakes out of the engine box in the closet. The MVVS is faster and would make an easier installation, but the Webra still has a lot of "just because" appeal.

He's checking that the pitch angle doesn't exceed 60 degrees. Though the way he's holding it, it looks like he's being pretty conservative.

It was quite windy, a good slow lap or two and then full survival mode, as shown by the low pitch angle of the planes.
Bill's new Zero design is just as inovative as his previous designs have been, the slider is not the Kelly Hite design, but somewhat similar, very clean aerodynamically.
Phil Dunlap is the Center Judge with the triangle, in addition to his being the Event Director. He is often found Racing in Quickie Rat, Sport Goodyear, and Goldberg. He has tremendous dedication to all facets of Control Line flying.
