Inflation?
« on: September 17, 2011, 07:34:15 PM »
I just bought a J. Roberts Mauler off of Ebay.  The box still has the orginal price tag one it.  It sold new for 15.95 at
Hobby Horse in Wisconsin.  All parts seem to be there, and it has the J. Roberts bell crank still with it. One would pay around 25 bucks for the bell crank alone now days.  Something for my Rossi 60 to nest in for next season.

A new profile Guardian is $110.00 and a bellcrank is $25.00 plus shipping. You paid $125.00 plus shipping for the Mauler. I think the Mauler was a better deal!
The Mauler was my first carrier ship so one of my favorites. I had a Veco 45RC mounted inverted in it. It always ran perfect and I beat many high zoot temperamental machines because it was so dependable and I could get it on the deck every time.    Mike

A friend of mine gave me his old Mauler that is 43 years old now.  It seems to be coming apart at the seams. Looks to have a lot of Ambroid used on/in it. Thought about attempting to rebuild it, but thought it would be easy and safer to just start a new one.  Gotta finish my FJ4 before I start on this one, and also got to get back to work on my 32 roadster.

My last  big engine is a ST .61RV ABC with Perry porting. It was done by Jim Dross who won a few Nats in 70's. I bought several items from him. I sold some but have two class1 ships and three engines. the tigre is new an awesome. He sent me plans scaled up for Class 2 Areobonita. I have three kits of Sterling Guardian and will make at least one for Class1. First is getting the two I have in the air. Tucson will have a Carrier contest this weekend and I am going to help out Timming. Should be interesting even. I am glad bought alot of new hardware as now Brodaks prices are crazy. Doubled the price of lines.

Dear Lee and all,

Using the CPI to compare inflation, a $15.95 item in 1965 (I think that was about the time the Mauler was issued) would coast you $114.71 with today's dollar. (deleted) Keep in mind, there are way too many "issues" to put the blame on one group or another.

In 1965 I could not afford a $16.00 kit.  In 2011 I still can't afford a $114 kit.  Not much changes I guess.  However, I am about to offer some more "Wildcat" profile kits with a new marketing/sales/cost plan that has never been tried.  It will be announced later this month. There will be many that wont believe the basic idea.

Not bitchin about the cost of the Mauler now at all.  I was kinda taken back that it was that inexpensive back in the sixties.  Just an average guy now, but 120.00 is easier to come by now than the 15.95 was for me in "67".  I know back then, 25 cent gasoline was alot to me, now look at it.

When the Mauler came out it was expensive for me.   It was after several Sterling Gaurdians that I finally latched onto one and powered it with the McCoy .60 with the Bill Johnson throttle set up.    H^^

Congrats on the auction Lee.
What are you going to power it with?

If you do a little bit every day it will get done, or you can do it tomorrow.

Hey Doug,  I have a Rossi 60 that I have been saving for some reason or another.  Thought this may be why.
