MARTIN MAULER FROM STURDY-BUILT

  ::) I've been out of Carrier for a long time. Just picked up a Martin MA-1 from the Ebxxxx  place. Never tried Class II. I saw the rules for Carrier II and it doesn't say anything about pressure systems on the engine section. Only on profile as we know the limiting of engines and feed system. 2 Questions
 1- Anything I should fix on the MA-1 ( other that the trash please!!!) ~^  as I do not know Sturdy-Built kits.
 2- Want to use the right feed system for engine ( have to find my 60 Rossi somewhere or if I sold it)I know there must be better engines out there,, but do not want to spend my retirement on it... D>K

pressure is allowed on class I & II, but not profile

I have built quite a few AM-1 Maulers. Here are some of the mods I would do:

#1 Make the wing incidence angle 0. If you don't you will find your self flying high speed with full down.
#2 Use a Veco style elevator horn. If you use the stock set up the elevator will break in the center.The kit elevator is not scale anyway.It should be solid in the center and use two elevators.
#3 Mount the engine either sideways or straight up. Make the firewall from 1/4" thick plywood and screw a R/C style engine mount to it. They run better that way a don't get banged up on hard landings.
#4 Make longer, bent forward, larger wire diameter landing gear so you won't flip over on ladings.
#5 Make a fiberglass engine cowling instead of the built-up balsa block style.

 H^^ Thank you Sky!!  H^^ I've never built a scale Carrier II entry, always profile.

 :) It may seem to some that I am doing too many things at once. Let me clear up some of the stuff and maybe it will be more clear to all, about the questions and the posts.

 I've been tinkering with C/L since I was ~ 12 yrs old. Off and on I picked up R/C. I became very serious at it since C/L buddies were very hard to find in the Northeast along with the areas to fly and I could not compete with Foxes against the Nelsons. I also was not flying enough to be any good! HB~> A good friend got me started again with GX Combat, but R/C was my interest still.
 See, the knowledge that I always wanted to know was only available if one was a very competitive and attended the events in those days (pre Cloud).Then I found StuntH. y1
In here, the experience and knowledge base is unlimited. I am now like a kid in a candy store!!  #^ The areas that I always followed in C/L are Carrier, P.A and Combat.  So, to all, I am sincerely thankful that the knowledge is forwarded without any misgivings. I've seen the posts where some folks "pretend" to increase their presence. I have no interest. I just want to "know" and be somewhat competitive.

Glad you are having fun. you might want to consider coming down to our Carrier meet on May 19 in Middlesex N.J. We don't get a whole lot of participation but still have fun. Profile, Cl I, Cl II and .15. I am attempting to fly a couple of new planes this year. Tom Schaefer

I have had good luck running both front and rear intake 60's on suction with the OS 4E carburetor. My Webra rear intake and MVVS front intake would both go under 17 seconds with a good needle setting. For front intake engines on suction, I would recommend an upright engine installation for better fuel system geometry. If the carb is too far outboard in relation to the tank (as per side mounted engine), it will always go rich in the air on high speed.

It is true that side mounting will suffer changes due to tank location when on suction but many Class 1&2 planes use a pressure system. Pressure systems with pressure regulators run steady regardless of thank location.
  In the good old days we ran crankcase pressure and had a hard time going from high speed to low speed because of the pressue change. Today we have pressure regulators and pumps that can deliver a steady fuel flow.

Bill, gerally speaking, what is your tank setup on profile ships with your 4E and 4BK carbs with  no prsesure.
