I went to Carmichaels with 16 airplanes to enter 13 events. I ended up using 11 planes to fly the 13 events, loaned out 3 planes and didn't use 2. Didn't wreck any. I also left the camera in the car didn't take on single picture at the contest. So I took a few while I was unpacking.
Mark Warwashana joined our entourage for the first time. He pitted a total of three entries for six official flight in Racing on Tuesday and Wednesday. He got schooled pretty good in Brodak Racing.
On Thursday, Mark gave everybody a big dose of big league carrier by sweeping Class I and Profile, by huge margins.
I took my first-ever shot at Class I with my brand-new Mottin 30" Skyraider. It did two complete hi-low-landing flghts right out of the box. Landings: perfect. Low speed, as good as you can expect on a Nostalgia plane with fixed leadouts. High speed: not so high, needs work. Good enough for 3rd Place.

I flew my Brodak Junior Lightning Streak in 15 Profile class and won again, with pretty much the same score as in past years.
On the second attempt I provided some entertainment for those in the house. I did a high and low that would have improved my score by about 30 points, but missed the deck. The plane skidded off into some high grass and I figured it was dead. But the UP line snagged something and kicked the engine back to full speed and sent the plane chording across the circle, near me! I back peddled enough to catch the plane when to hit the end of the the lines, but it broke a leadout and two lines, coming to rest on the far side with no additional damage.
I expect it to be back in 2011 with a new leadout and silk-and-dope covering lieu of the gray Monokote. I was thinking "rehab" all spring. The broken leadout finalized the decision. After four seasons of use, the patches were getting pretty thick.

Great to hear you did okay. If I get things worked out will be there next year. H^^

Hi Paul, I find your choice for a .15 plane kind of refreshing. I always had a weak spot for the "Streak" series of planes and have enjoyed building and flying them. I was at a carrier contest over this last weekend and saw a .15 carrier plane built on the "Flite Streak Trainer Kit" that I thought looked interesting although that plane doesn't look much like a Streak to me (not short coupled enough). I didn't stick around long enough to see it fly so don't know what kind of luck they had with it. The "Jr. Lighting Streak" looks a little bit better to me and other than the short fuselage its numbers seem to be more in line with the planes I have been building.
After building planes with a long control movement to fly carrier Ive come to the conclusion that if the plane is balanced correctly, the line rake is good, and the engine has plenty of out thrust (9 to 11 degrees or so) you don't need to have a "long" control movement to get a descent flying carrier plane. So anyway Ive ordered a "Jr. Flight Streak" and a Brodak .15 to see if I can I put something together that would fly well enough that it might interest people to try .15 carrier. Eric

I bought Brodak's plans for both the Lightning Streak (for Foxberg racing) and the Junior Lightning Streak for carrier. Both planes have paid off handsomely on the home ice of their supplier.
To Joe:
The flight with the Skyraider was only third place in The Brodak, but is was my first placing in the event. I was quite relieved that this once-a-year opportunity came out well. Winning the event is not an option with Marcus in the house.

It may have just taken 3rd place, but from your yelled comment to me it was a "FIRST PLACE" flight in the thrill it gave you! I really enjoyed your Class 1 flights.

Paul, Is that Skyraider from the '69 AMA plans or a different set, thats really neat!
-
Correct.
American Aircraft Modeler, January, 1969. According to the article, you can use a high performance 40 or an RC 60. I built one in 1975 with an Enya 60 and it was too much engine for the wing.
The Class I version is a happier model.

Paul thats really neat! My dad was in VA-65 on the Enterprise and the Connie, he reilisted and changed commands about the time they phased the Skyraiders out of that squadron.. still have his patches and such. He did talk fondly of the old bird. More and more, I seem to have an interest in that plane, have to build one.... but I still need to practice up on flying LL~
Who actually sells that particular plan now, I'd love to build one sometime and maybe the old Guardian and corsair I have tucked away as well....but again, I need to improve my flyin skillz HB~> HB~>

I was aboard the JFK and witnessed the last arrested landing and the last shipboard takeoff of the Skyraider line - these were the 4-seat electronic warfare versions. This was either 1969 or 1970 coming home from a Mediterranean cruise.

He used to tell me some stories, probably embelished a bit, but I always liked one he told about some drills or war games where the Skyraiders were the hunted and the jet squadrons were the hunters... according to my dad, the skyraiders would "evade" everything by deploying the dive brakes and flaps and just basically hanging in the clouds flying no faster than birds etc. He liked to claim that a the pilot would wait and when the jet jockey got to close the skyraider would pounce for the kill.
He also talked about flying the base in Virgina and I think Bermuda... I worshiped the only artifacts left from that time, two Mccoy .35's, a late Johnson CS, and a Fox .35 the gold/chorme version form what 1962 (and an old Schuco racer he claimed the lightened and raced) or so....We used those same engines when we flew in the late 70's and early 80's.... I still have most of, somehow lost the Johnson and the Fox..., I'll be using them again as I attempt to get back into the fold
Tall story, probably, but it sounded good to me as an 8-10 year old ;D It was that kind of story, and his old planes (and pieces of planes) that got me interested in CL in the first place probably in the late 70's.

The USAF was still flying land-based Skyraiders while I was in. A very impressive airplane, as is often the case with the ultimate example of a particular breed.
I just hand-scaled the magazine plan back in 1974. My latest effort was blown up at Office Max, in 11 x 17 pieces for about a dollar.

Go to the AMA site and look for plans. They have all the past plans as well as what John Pond had. H^^
